Anyone know of a good Vic-20 or C-64 emulator?

Was wondering if anyone here uses a decent Vic-20 or C-64 emulator. I have tried a bunch of them, and amazingly,, they are EXACTLY like a Vic-20 and C-64, run-load then when loaded they sit there and do nothing. One of them is limited and when you run a game for about 20 seconds locks and just sits there. That one costs 15 bucks. If someone knows of a good free one I would like to know.

I see a lot of games out there but the only games I am interested in are the Command Line games like Draculas Castle. Which leads me to ask another question.

Anyone know if there are any modern Command Line games? Open Source maybe?

I have checked through Computer.com, seems everyone is hooked on the newest whiz bang game. They bore me. I want to play the games that require Command Lines and hand written maps.

Anyone?

nethack.

Or do you mean text adventures? I miss those myself.

Yep, didnt think there was anyone around who would remember them as the Adventures.

Looks like here would be a good place to start.

I was actually involved in the production of an adventure game once. It never got published though. I can't even remember much of what it was about.

You also might want to look into MUDs. They are a little different but similar.

This is one I dipped into for a while way back when... http://www.nanvaent.org/

TankerHC, Vic-20 or C-64? Did you type this post on a Timex Sinclair 1000 or was it a TI-99? I think I just got a flashback whiplash. Did Mr. Peabody & Sherman just set the Wayback machine to 1980?

There were a lot of those text adventure games written for BASIC.  You should be able to run BASIC on any Windows machine, but getting the games may be a trick.  I re-used all of my TI-99 tapes.

Google 'abandonware'.

I saw the other day there is a Mr Peabody and Sherman movie coming out.

Timex Sinclair 1000, wow, I had not thought of my first computer in sooo many years.

At one time there was a Linux distribution that claimed to mimic the C64.  Probably not software-compatible though.

I had multiple c64"s and a c128. Had more fun programming the 6502 (6510) processor than any other since. They were fairly difficult to burn up, and cheap enough that it wasn't the end of the world if you did burn one up, so there was "little risk" to make hardware attachments controlled by the c64.

Second to the 6502 processor, my next favorite fun processor was the 68000-68040 processor as in Macs, Amiga, Atari ST. Lotsa fun in ASM.

Nowadays the software environment is so "mature" and complicated that it takes a lot of fun out of it. Takes months or years to get anything significant done, and too much dweebwork studying all the details one needs to know.

Maybe the equivalent simple fun hacking niche today would be the tiny cumputer tinkertoy systems such as arduino. Maybe one of these days will play with some of those.

It was neat back in the old days to actually be able to take a program from conceptionn to finished in less than a month. Sometimes only a day or two.

My 7 year old has gotten into playing the original Colossal Cave Adventure that I got running on a Raspberry PI hooked up to the TV.  She loves drawing maps, and has been having fun with it.  "You're in a maze of twisty little passages all alike."

Infocom has made all of the Zork Trilogy available for free.  They run great in Frotz on Linux.

This was my first setup.

Vic-20

32k Ram Expander (Module)

5 1/4 Disc (1020? 6010? Trying to remember without looking)

Tape drive

1200 Baud Modem

I actually had a At 400, but never used it as a Computer, used it to play games, it was an upgrade to my Coleco Arcade.
