Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter - Democrat friggin Administration?

Bottom line . . we've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember.

Ready? It was very simple, and at the time everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy (located appropriately at 1000 Independence Ave) was instituted 8-04-1977 TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

HEY, PRETTY EFFICIENT, HUH?

AND NOW IT'S 2008, 31 YEARS LATER, AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR, THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES, AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE! THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY 'WHAT WAS I THINKING?'

I remember since I lived in Oak Ridge at the time. It was partly established to lessen our reliance on foreign oil, but more importantly it was established for the nuclear energy and weapons aspect.

well, that was in 1977 and now is 2008, republicans had a chance to fix that if they wanted to, instead they ballon our debt to 10 trillion dollars, it will take us 200 years to pay it of, and that is of course if China don`t decide to cash out their treasury bonds we are giving them as a coleteral for the trillions we borrow...because if they do we are toasted....

That's not just the republicans there, that's congress. Spending money that we don't have falls on all the crooks in Washington. Not one side at this point is any better or any worse than the other, they BOTH suck!

yeah, you are right, they all promisse all kinds of things and as soon as they get what they want, they don`t care any longer...what makes me mad is that middle class and working man always pays....sad, but this is not the case only in US , that is pretty much the same scenario all over the world...

it looks like they deal mainly with nuclear energy and do manage petroleum reserve, I couldn`t see anywhere any connection with gas or oil prices or anything that has to do with civilians...

The dems didn't get control until '06, and they've done absolutely nothing with it, of course.

Regardless of party affiliation, Jimmy Carter was one of the worst presidents we've ever had. He continues to outdo his presidential legacy in private life.
