New Company Policy

Well, when I got hired here I looked through out the entire manual for any reference what so ever to weapons or firearms and found none. The new company "reference" document came out today and there is a new section:

Work Place Violence

For the safety and well-being of all employees,My Company strives to maintain a work environment free from intimidation, threats, or violent acts and has a “no tolerance” policy on Work Place Violence. This includes, but is not limited to, intimidating, threatening, or hostile behaviors, physical abuse, vandalism, arson, sabotage, use of weapons, carrying or possession of weapons of any kind onto Company property, or any other act, which, in our opinion, is inappropriate to the workplace. In all situations where we deem appropriate, we reserve the right to immediately terminate employment and/or contact local enforcement authorities when violations of this policy have been substantiated.

Apparently a pocket knife or a pistol in the car is an act of violence.

I know that Tungsten, I just am a little peeved because they rewrote the thing and added it in there. It wasn't there before.

I know, concealed means concealed, but the way I read the policy is that the pocket knife I carry is technically a weapon and I could get fired for that.

Rule of thumb, don't piss off the co-workers.

Did I say you didn't know that? I was just pointing out the obvious fact that this sucks and there's nothing we can do about it as non-union employees. I hate unions even worse, so I guess that leaves me with being self-employed if I ever decide to stop playing the corporate game.

I especially loved the open-endedness of their wording in the snippet you provided.

I know you didn't. Just clarifying my position.

Yup, they left it TOTALLY OPEN to CTA.

Tennessee is an "at-will" state so they can pretty much fire you just because the sun rose this morning. Nothing new there.

yeah, but then you have to pay their unemployment unless you can justify the termination

I'm no expert but I have done a little HR training and written up a few employee handbooks for our companies and clients.... and IMHO, the wording of that clause is pretty poor.

A good rule of thumb I learned when writing compliance manuals and the like is that trying to catch it all usually ends up missing more than you catch.

Oh well, as long as I am in charge - I know my handbooks won't have anti-weapon clauses... 'cause they are dumb.

And no, we're not hiring :D
