A guy at one of the matches we were at this year won 1,000 yard F/TR with a .223.

 

Obviously was not his 1st rodeo but he out shot the .308 guys at that distance. Heard he used a Berger 90g VLD.

He's not gonna find a factory 6 BR in the price range he is wanting to stay in this is why I suggested a 223 and if that's got short legs tell that to the high power shooters who shoot 1000 yards with one. sent from RAZR Maxx HD using Tapatalk Pro

 

I heard it from a high power shooter. But, maybe he was just wrong. I have some 80's and 82's. Too bad I took my rifle apart to build a grendel.

I have a 223 Howa that is a great shooter for sell in classifieds we may be a little far apart though distance wise. I would take $700 for it shoots 55g bullets very accurate.

I love Savage but I do have one complaint about the particular rifle you are looking at,that being the bolt release is on the trigger guard which is a newer design they(Savage) have decided to go with when the old design was perfect. If you are planning on adding aftermarket bottom metal or an aftermarket stock you may want to go with a different model seeing as how there arent a lot of options for the rifles with the bolt release on the trigger guard. I also dont like how its a "1:10 5R", that particular rifle is the only one in 308 that I have seen claim to be 5r with a 1:10 twist, maybe they went with 1:10 due to the short barrel? My advice to you would be to save about $300 more and go with a Savage 12 LRP in 260 Remington or the Savage 10 HS Precision 5r 1:11.25 in 308 you wont regret it(Both of these models come in excellent HS precision stocks as well).

Find a "...lightly used and lovingly cared for..." older Remington 700 in 308 or 300 win mag with a varmiter barrel... Invest in the best scope ya can buy to begin with, shoot it with "match type loads" and see how it shoots "...as is"...  Save your money and buy a good trigger and good barrel as ya have some extra dough if it doesnt shoot to suit ya in the beginning...Learn to use a "sissy bag" when shootin it.... Any rifle that reaches a 1000 yds will have some push back....
