A Scanner Darkly

Finally curiosity got the best of me and I paid amazon $2.99 plus TN tax to watch A Scanner Darkly.

Philip K. Dick wrote several SF stories which were butchered into hollywood blockbusters. So this rotoscoped (animation atop live action) movie seems to me a quite accurate rendition of the novel. Whether a person would like the movie is another thing altogether. It all hangs together for me, having read the book. Dunno if it would make as much sense for a person who had not read the book, but is a very literal interpretation which manages to capture the "high points" quite well.

The book is simultaneously hilarious, pitiful, and tragic. Among other things, it is about an undercover narcotics officer who is so deep undercover that he is assigned to do surveillance on himself.

Some of the funny parts-- Not filthy, but most likely not safe for the office--

Saw the flick couple years ago, watched it again sometime in the last 9 months (on cable). Enjoyed it both times, but the "real animation" sort of wears on me.

I need to read the novel, been on my list for next time I do a big McKay's run.

A couple years ago got wife a kindle because she thought she might like it, but didn't. So I've been downloading "free" old SF in .mobi format and having the kindle read them to me. I don't go to pirate bay type peer sharing sites, but managed to find lots of it "in the clear" without having to also get the concomitant viruses and worms, including most everything written by PKD.

There are non-SF works waiting on the back-burner, such as the complete works of Mark Twain, but the old classic SF is better brain-rot candy.

I'm a huge Phillip K. Dick fan.  Its been years since I've seen Scanner Darkly but I remember enjoying it for what it was.  I need to rewatch it.
