Hello to all, I have been lurking here for quite some time and need some info. After a long time of shooting traditional muzzleloaders I am ready to get back into the world of centerfire. I am gouing to hit the next gun show for a rifle. I have been douing alot of research on the M-44s and they seem like a good deal for the money. Plus plinking ammo is cheap. The good ole 30-30 what can I say they have proved themselves thru the years. If you had a few hundred to spend which one would you get? I will be douing some hunting with this rifle and more thqan likely a some optics are in the future. Thanks

Well you can get 3 Mosins for a "few hundred" 7.62x54r plinking ammo is mostly corrosive so you have to be careful with that, soft point, noncorrosive, brass stuff is available it's just sligthtly harder to find.

Mosins are good rifles and I have owned at least twenty or more. The M-44's are indeed cheap and the ammo is too. A lot of 44's are not that accurate at first and some will never get there. The optics issue is a biggie, there just arent alot of ways to mount a scope on the little carbine to my liking. the most effective I have tried is set up like the scout rifles with the scope forward of the receiver on the iron sight housing. Quite a few 44"s were counter bored and that affects the rifles accuracy. The rifle was also designed to fire with the bayonet out. I had to file on every 44 ive owned to get it in the black at 100 yards which in our state is just what i feel a hunting rifle should do. For plinking id get the mosin for hunting id go with the lever gun. Also if you go for the old russkie, think about the model 38, same system without the bayonet, same size too.

Optics=modern rifle. While hunting with a battle rifle has a certain appeal, it's not that practical either, pretty doggone heavy.

Don't forget the difference in recoil. If you like to feel like you have shot something be sure to go with the Mosin. Modern ammo is not that hard to find, Though it's not found in our Wally World it is mostly found online or a gun shop & still not that expensive. I have a 91/30 Mosin that I like quite well. I don't do much deer hunting anymore, but for plinking 7 haveing fun I will grab the 7.62x54R over the 30-30.

ammo is cheap. So, if i'm ever low on funds and can't afford much 308 .. i take the russian out. A dozen rounds will cost $1.92. My shoulder will start to get sore around that time - you so you don't need a whole lot of ammo for a day at the range.

I don't have exp. with the lever but there is something about holding something from history like this nagant. i keep thinking of the movie Enemy at the Gates when I fire off some rounds and work that bolt.

They are awesome imho. Plus, if you ever get bored - it's not a big investment. You can probably sell it for the same and not really loose any $.

I love my mosin, I got it for 40 bucks. I always tell myself I'm going to make into a poor mans scout rifle (a la Jeff Cooper) but then I just end up spending my mad money on another gun. One day she will get the sport treatment.
