I'm only 29, but I grew up watching Bonanza and Rifleman reruns on TV with my dad.

That was good and depressing at the same time. I had never thought about how many of the old Western stars have died. I've spent many an hour watching the old westerns. When I found out we had the Western Channel my wife thought I'd grown into my lazy-boy. She'd never seen me watch TV for more than 2 hours much less not move for 2 days. Hopalong Cassidy and John Wayne weekend.

They have since moved on to the new westerns. :D

Bonanza,Gunsmoke,Big Valley,Rawhide, and High Chaparral were my favorites.Later I enjoyed the Lonesome Dove chain of mini-series and regular tv series with Scott Bairstow and Eric Mcormick. The last season The Outlaw Years was the grittiest western series I ever saw.Deadwood tried to imitate it but failed IMO.

Excellent post. I am over 70 and I can remember all of those people and shows. I live within sight of Dragon Tooth, the mountain that Audie Murphy's plane crashed into and caused his death. Also Bill Boyd AKA Hopalong Cassiday was a second cousin to my grandmother.
