Earlier this summer, I heard my first two quail in over ten years.

 

Growing up, we used to flush them out of yards just riding bicycles around the neighborhood roads.

I've seen more wild coveys this year than I have in the last 15. Very encouraging.

 

Yeah, I use to hear them all the time when I was a kid, they seemed to be everywhere then.

That's neat, I've never gotten the chance to hunt quail but always wanted to.  I find it ironic that when my grandparents were growing up they hunted quail all of the time but rarely, if ever, saw a deer.  I've killed more deer than I can count but I've never shot at a quail.

Knock down the coyotes!  They are the quails worst enemy at this point.

Stray (feral) cats, Bobcats and feral hogs will destroy a quail population in very short order!

In the six years I've lived here, I've only seen two I flushed from the road taking a walk and never even heard any.

 

Deer and turkey up the ying yang but no quail. Must be a few isolated pockets in Tennessee where quail can thrive. We have more Yeti and Big Foot sightings around here than quail. I think the last quail sighting made headlines in our local paper?

 

That's going to be some mighty fine eating. If you don't mind ne asking, how are you going to fix 'em, baked, fried, smoked...

My wife has a plan, so I'll take a pic and let you know exactly how she did them. Probably have them tomorrow. I'm hoping she does the same as she did with the pheasants we got earlier this year when on a trip to PA.

So, she browned them in a cast iron skillet and then baked them for 2 hours in an amazing sauce. Wonderful meal

 

Oh and the side is butternut squash with onions!!!!

I was in Alabama in the summer and heard SO many Quail while I was fishing.

Had forgotten that sound.

Also remember to never kill crows.
Crows chase hawks and hawks will decimate a covey.

Hunted quail all the time in my teen years. We had three coveys close by on my granddad's small farm. There was an albino quail in one of the coveys. My granddad always said. "Don't you boys shoot my albino quail". I later saw a few others in the covey with some white spots. I really miss quail hunting...and quail eating too. My granny used to roll them in flower with some salt and black pepper in it. Then she would fry them in a black cast iron skillet, on top of the stove...like southern fried chicken. I've never had pheasant, but don't see how they could be any tastier than wild quail.
