It's funny but made me think

I went to bed the other night as usual and this happened and made me think.
I climbed in bed, dark of course, it was kinda cold so I pulled the covers up to my neck. As I did this I felt something run across my feet, up my leg, and out the side of the covers. It was one of my black cats. It took me by surprise. When I realized what happened and put two and two together was when I thought, I'm still wrapped up in these sheets, quilts, pillows, well if you are married your bed probably looks like mine.
If someone breaks in, would I be able to get through the gauntlet of covers on my bed?
It may sound silly, but it happened.

You would have to wake up first, then worry about the covers. My German Shepard is my alarm and acts as a buffer to give me time to become aware of my surrounding then act accordingly. Last winter, a tree branch broke off and hit our back deck during the wee hours and my dog alerted (read scared the crap out of me) to the situation. I have various defensive/alert rings around my dwelling....gives me time to react. My advise is to plan accordingly to what your percieved threat would be....helps you sleep better too.....

Trying to get out of bed fast while in a half asleep panic isn't likely to be real graceful. As stated, some sort of warning system, be it an alarm, dog, etc., to give you a few extra seconds can make the difference.

I have a dog (Kasey) Plus no wife so bed never hardly ever gets made and I only sleep under one semi light blanket and while exiting the bed I already have my gun in one hand. I also sleep in a totally dark house which puts me at the advantage because I walk through it every night in the dark either going to let Kasey out if she needs out, to the kitchen for a bottle of water or rest room. The bad guy is either going to have to use a light of some type or turn one on and that will be when I end his or their career..................jmho

My wife makes me get up.

Seriously though, a dog, security lights, on the house, and a huge, glaring street light in the front yard pretty much wake and light my way around.

Back when my wife was alive there was a nightlight in every room in the house and I swear she had better ears than the dogs cause she would hear things that would not even make the dogs bark but yet I had to get up and go check the house. I real miss doing that cause I miss her........... :ugh: :ugh: :ugh:

I've got a dog and she barks when things are off, but she don't bark at our cats. I think outside motion lights would be a plus for effort. My wife probably wouldn't wake if I was attacked.

Why do you think I have a dog and a wife?

O we have 8, no 9 dogs now, something or someone is getting me out of bed.

You just need to marry a woman who makes sure you wake up with no covers.

I can actually exit the bed quickly by throwing the covers off and be out and standing within half a second. The comes from many years of extending in-bed time past the alarm as long as possible. :)

I was home alone one night when the alarm(ADT) went off.  I was up out of bed, gun in hand before I knew WTH was going on.  But I had never thought about if I left the bedroom I would put myself into a funnel I don't want to be in. So I stayed put.  By the time the cobwebs cleared I realized the alarm company hadn't called and the alarm pad didn't show any zones had been breached. So it was probably a queertron in the alarm system that decided to scare the crap out of me at 0300. So I reset the alarm and pushed the start button on the coffee pot and started my day a few hours early.

It made me think about a few things.  Don't leave the bedroom because the bad guy will have a better position than I will and TV sucks at 0300 on a Saturday morning.

I do this too, for the same reason. I'm big as heck too. I think having just a down comforter helps that. Or maybe just oversleeping when you know it's delivery day.

I have two 100lb pit bulls snoring at the foot of my bed snoring as I type this. It would take gunfire to get past them and by then I would be fully awake. I will never forget the day my wife woke me by shooting squirrel from the back deck with a 12ga right outside our window. Needless to say I was hot.
