Clays w/ SxS

Anybody shoot clays with a sxs? Trap, skeet, sporting...just whatever. Hunting, too. I really want a double barrel and am kinda back and forth between sxs and o/u. Whichever I buy will be used for hunting/playing.

I shoot a lot of clays, other than when I took my father with me 4-5 years ago, he brought a sxs, I have not seen one since.

I think hunting with a SS is a lot of fun, and somewhat a throw-back.  However decent I am at wingshooting, I am not as consistent with clay targets with my SS vs. my OU.  I find that is true for most shotgunners, especially with sporting clays.  That is why they have a separate division at some shoots just for SS.

I still enjoy using SxS's for shooting skeet and hunting. I also have one I built from a beater for some Cowboy action shooting.

One thing I've found out about all of my SxS's is the left barrel seems to kick more than the right. All of my shotguns are 12 ga.

Thanks for the feedback. I have heard some people say its harder to shoot with a sxs. I was all set to buy an o/u until I saw the CZ Hammer Classic.

I once shot some backyard trap with a SxS, I was able to consistently hit doubles with it.  Don't know how it would do in real competition but it was a lot of fun just playing around.

I use an O/U most of the time for clays. I have shot a S/S a few times and I'm not as consistent. However I would assume it's what you get used to.

That CZ is a nice looking gun.

I do not shoot skeet much and I stink at it, but when I go (once a year maybe?) I use my SxS.   Its a rossi coach gun with external hammers, and probably totally unsuitable for the sport, but I like the gun and so I use it anyway :)

I think the problem with sxs is that the barrels share a bead sight that is not exactly true to point of aim for either barrel, while a O/U gun or single barrel gun has a bead that is correct for both (or the one) barrel.   Minor, but if you are serious about the sport, it matters I guess.

I have 12 and 20 gauge Ithaca doubles. I shoot clays with them as well as hunt with them occasionally. I like doubles. I find that I seem to shoot better with the 12, but the 20 sure is light and trim.

I also have a 20 gauge Browning Citori. I prefer the looks and feel of the doubles, but to tell the truth, I probably shoot better with the over under.

Heck, buy both! No way you'll be wrong then.

I'm a believer that a shotgun should have two barrels.

Thanks for the input. I was all gung ho I was getting an ou then I saw that CZ hammer classic. I am like you, gregintenn. 2 bbls is beautiful. i've always liked break actions better. I thought I wanted a pump until I got my 870 express supermag. I like it but it turns out I like my break action better. Right now I have a .410 sxs that was my great grandfather's. I have also located my old Stevens singleshot 20 ga. which was my first gun. I am trying to sweet talk the current owner into selling it back to me. I am now looking to get a new 12 ga. sxs or o/u or both. CZ also makes a hammer coach with 20" bbls which looks pretty sweet. I've got the bug pretty bad. My wife's gonna divorce me.

My wife's learned to live with it. Spend some time with her, keep all the bills paid, and treat her to something nice once and a while, and she'll get used to it as well.

You're right gregintenn...My wife's alright. Like you said, she don't say much aslong as things are taken care of.

Tempest455..Your son is pretty good with that old shotgun. He also makes a great argument for the sxs.

As others have already said; it's hard to beat an OU for heavy duty bird or clay bird shootin... They just handle better and an OU always points in the same direction...
