Holy mother of Hades!  Are you kidding!?

Robert, I saw this post earlier but didn't see who wrote it.  I would've never guessed it would be you!   :)  technicalities aside:  The words "usually" and "violate" should never be used to describe how one interacts with the 4 rules.  I am guessing you didn't mean it like it came across.  If you did, please refrain from teaching anything about firearms to anyone until you think differently.

Again - don't mean to flame you - Maybe I have a needlessly absolute respect for those 4 rules... maybe I am wrong, and maybe they are not that important... but I doubt it.

The word "usually" was a poor choice on my part. All I was trying to say was that it's possible to violate one and often even two of the four rules and NOT have a negligent discharge.  I'm not saying anyone SHOULD nor advocating that anyone do violate any of the four rules at any time but yes...I can you absolutely can and not fire the weapon.

Simple example - I can take a weapon that I've not made save (by unloading it) and assume/don't know if it's loaded or not (violating rule no. 1) then, point it in an obviously unsafe direction (violating rule no. 2) - at that point I've violated two of the four rules. However, there will be no ND so long as I keep my damn finger off the trigger.  Should I violate any of the four? ABSOLUTELY NOT -  I don't and I've never suggested otherwise; if that's how my initial post came across that certainly wasn't my intention!

The real point of my initial post was that there is more going on with this story than simply pointing the firearm in an unsafe direction.

The problem with violating any of the four rules at any time is...

Finger off trigger (It just went off, I don't know what happened)

Treat as always loaded (I didn't know it was loaded)

Dont point at something (We were just playing around)

Know whats behind (i didn't know he was there)
