Youth/Teen/Adult Deer Rifle

I am looking for a deer rifle mainly for my 13 year old. He has lots of experience shooting pistols from .22 up to my .45 1911. The only rifles he has shot are .22 and a customized WWII .30 Cal Carbine.

I need it to be something my 17 year old son could also use and maybe even me when im not shooting my 270 Weatherby.

I was wondering if a .308 or 30-30 would be a good choice.

to me...a 30 30 has less kick than a 308...but a great all around gun is a .243 if you think that is to small than i would think of a 30 30. there is ony for sale on here right now for 175 with a scope. not a bad deal

I want to stick in the $300 price range or so for this gun since it may just end up in the safe if the kids decide they dont like sitting in the woods doing nothing... LOL

You could always pick up a .308 AR. At least if it doesnt end up being a hunting gun, it would be a fun range toy. Of course...that is 3x the price range you have in mind, lol.

That is what I am planning to buy for me :D So I can shoot 3-gun and just have some fun at the range and hunt with it.

Several manufacturers make .243 youth guns of various types. A Savage scoped combo could probably be had for around $350-400. They may not be the prettiest guns in the cabinet, but they'll by-God shoot.

Thanks for all the input. I think I am going to go with the .243 that way my 7 year old daughter will be able to use it soon too.
