Federal judge declares Utah polygamy law unconstitutional

District court ruling finds key parts of Utah polygamy laws unconstitutional.

"The Browns filed their lawsuit in July 2011, arguing Utah’s law violated their right to privacy. The family’s argument relied primarily on the 2003 U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down the Texas law banning sodomy, which was celebrated by gay rights advocates."

Not so concerned about polygamy, more concerned about the underage and incestuous stuff that seems to go on within these groups. Perhaps legalizing the polygamy itself would lead to better policing of this kind of thing.

The type and makeup of romantic relationships of consenting adults is of no business of the government. Another positive aspect of legal recognition of plural marriage is that it would allow elimination of a type of cheating of the welfare system popular among polygamous communities. Where the non legal spouses receive foodstamps as single mothers.

I'd rather just see us eliminate (or a wholesale restructuring of) welfare but at least this could be an improvement.

An elimination of the welfare state and an elimination of government mucking about in folks' relationships.

There you have it! First they won't let us have a harem then they take all our guns away. The connection is obvious and irrefutable.

I have serious doubt tha we will get either of them done away with in the present administration because 1) the Democrats need the welfare vote to win anything and 2) this administrations has been the most invasive and non transparent administration in the history of Federal Government so they have no intentions of fixing anything that they benefit from so much....................jmho

Much as I am no fan of welfare cheats, or, indeed, welfare in general, I doubt that women in polygamous relationships claiming as single mothers is much an issue worth paying attention to.

I don't like government involvement in marriage because when you grant it legitimacy to regulate things in your favor, you are obligated to recognize that same legitimacy when it changes the rules and turns the tables against you.
