The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Is freaking awesome....saw the HFR 3D version....only thing I hate about these movies is waiting a year to see the next...

It's the Christmas tradition, me and the wife wake up around 9am. Go out to a movie. Eat Italian at Buca Di Beppo. Come home and go back to sleep. This year, its Smaug and rigatoni!!!!

We went out last night and saw it. Pretty good, some of the CGI was a bit too apparent. Cannot wait for the next one, I read the books back in school and was excited that they finally went back yo make Bilbo's adventure into a movie and not just the Lord of the Rings.

A couple of movie previews they showed have me excited... New Godzilla (have to dig out the originals and watch them all again) and a sequel to 300.

The people who made that video are obviously limited. No imagination and the attention span of a toddler.
I'd like to see more movies of this quality. Instead we get mostly rubbish.
It's simply NOT possible without current technological abilities, to make a film that can equal a well written book, but Peter Jackson is getting closer than anyone ever has.

Yeah, I figured some folks might get a kick out of it. I saw it on screen junkies the other day. To be honest though, I've only recently watched the full trilogy. I saw the first one when it came out and it didnt do anything for me, so the thought of sitting through another two of them wasn't appealing. I don't get the appeal of them. I gave it a try though.

I am not a LOTR dork or anything...I just like the epic scale of the story and the cinematography. ..you can't do the story full justice in movie form but I think Peter Jackson has done a good job of bringing them to life...

True! 

 

I really enjoyed the movie, but it really just uses the bones of the book, then takes the story in a different direction to get to the same end... does that make sense?  Being the self-declared dedicated Tolkien Dork that I am, I had to remind myself that it was a movie and would never be anything like the book.  That's how I was able to enjoy the movie so much.  That being said, I'd go back and see it again!!!  Peter Jackson re-affirmed his status a master Cinematographer, Director, Producer, Writer and story teller in my mind!

We saw it today. Fun movie. They inserted a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't in the book, but entertaining either way.

I thought it was great.  Yeah, there is a lot of stuff in it not in the book. The  LOTR trilogy was the same way...but come on, did you want an hour of Tom Bombadil?  Rarely can any book be moved directly to film without some changes in the screen play.  What works in books doesn't always work so well in movies.  It is a pretty faithful adaptation.  Not as close as LOTR was, but THe Hobbit needs more help IMO than LOTR did.  Perhaps he will make The Silmarillion next.  Not sure how to do it...but it would be great.

 

Frankly, to me, the original Star Wars Trilogy and The LOTR are the most magical and engrossing bodies of work I have ever seen in film.  Yes, there is silliness in both of them, but taken as a whole, they are beautiful.  Any of those six movies (and The Hobbit is close) can stop me in my tracks and get me stuck in front of the TV at any time (The Battle of Hoth? The Battle of Helm's Deep? Which is better?)

 

Of course the greatest single work of all time is the 1986 Documentary, The Highlander.
