Suppressor for a .22 Mag

Do any of you guys have experience with cans for a .22 mag? Was thinking about a light weight yet decent yardage varmit / practice shooting gun. I am pretty set on a bolt action .22 mag (spacifically the Marlin 982VS in stainless). Putting a decent scope and possibly a suppressor for the ultimate quiet varmit stopper. I would like to find the quietest can without spending an arm and a leg (I am on a budget). Something along the lines of the Stalker made by the same people that makes the Thunder Trap I think it is.....AWC..... anyway it may be investing alot for such a little gun but I engoy shooting my .22lr, I just want something with a little more reach, and could be deadly quiet when shooting.

IIRC, there was an FAQ on Advanced Armament's website where someone asked a similar question. I might not be quoting exactly, but their response basically said that the .22Mag is not a good candidate for suppression because of the bullet's supersonic speed, that there would always be the -crack- of the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

Again, it's been a few months, so YMMV, but I hope that helps.

I'd be surprised if a .22lr can wouldn't work... but, as mentioned above, making the .22wmr subsonic would be the only way to make it truly effective. And, at that point you might as well be using .22lr.

Anyone know about the legality of hunting with a suppressed weapon?

It is pefectly legal in TN to hunt with a supressed weapon, provided it is legally owned and the weapon/hunter otherwise conform to the applicable hunting laws. (Duck season, wabbit season, that kinda thing). It is illegal to hunt with a firearm capable of automatic fire, which is a real bummer... severely limits my hunting gun choices. :D

And as to the OP... you would probably be best served by asking the manufacturer of a particular can whether or not they rate their product for WMR or not. Any .223 suppressor would be fine, but they are quite a bit heavier and pricier than rimfire units (of course, you can also shoot .223 out of them.) I do know that Gemtech makes a .17HMR suppressor. And as stated, 22mag being supersonic, it's still going to be pretty loud. To get "Stupid Quiet" (industry term), you really need subsonic projectiles.

realized I never answered the OP's question...

It could be considered a miniaturized Thundertrap, and like the Thundertrap, the Stalker dismisses the report of the weapon.

There is no doubt that there are suppressors available for the faster moving rimfire cartridges.

The point Dan is trying to make is that to get the performance (ie: Hollywood quite) that you may be looking for, you are playing with the wrong caliber.

My 10/22 chambered in .17HM2 is pretty damn quite with a suppressor, but is 10x louder than my 10/22 chambered in .22LR using subsonic ammo.
