Lets talk slings

Who here has experince using slings for shooting? I know the new rage is single points and 3 points, but I still like the idea of hasty and loop slings. I really liked the loop sling on the m16 for shooting the KD range in the Marines. What slings do you guys use? I'm running an m14 now, and really considering a National Match M1907 sling from Turner Saddlery. Any suggestions on length or other brands or even sling types I should look at? I'll be shooting mostly range stuff, but still want a good sling to carry in the woods and use hasty style for offhand shooting. Thanks guys

Use what you like.  Single point is good for small rifles or big pistols, and 3-point is the "can do anything" approach.  The big question is this: is your sling to carry the rifle or a shooting accessory?  If you plan to use the sling as part of your shooting method, to stabilize or control the gun, the 3 point is a good choice for an AR.  If you just want to haul the rifle, an old school strap (2 point?) is all you need.   The 2 point can be used for stability as well -- wrap the front around your hand and use it like a fore-end grip, but the 3 point offers more options if you don't mind fiddling with the straps to get it there.    Personally, since my AR has a foregrip and a bipod, the sling is to carry it, but my wife picked out a 3 point anyway so I have the full block and tackle setup in my way.

If you are looking at an M1907 sling I would not consider anything other than Turner Saddlery.  I have a couple and they are top notch.

I would suggest getting one slightly longer that you think you'll need else when you loop it up it just won't be right.

They offers "seconds" for about $20 less that you might consider.  One of mine is a second and I still can't find what's wrong with it.

I've found an old M1 carbine sling works well for most of my applications. It adjusts easily, and for shooting, you simply put your elbow through the loop, and it helps steady your hold. The cotton it is made of does not slip off your shoulder. They are lightweight and inexpensive, and the olive drab color looks good on most any gun.

Hell, I don't know.  It's been a while since I bought one.

I checked their website earlier today and they had 50 and 54" lengths for the seconds.  Get the 54".

I just got a black Turner national match in 54" length. Traded my neighbor for it. My wife made him a pan of brownies. His wife is in Missouri while he finishes up here at ORNL and never gets homemade food so I'd call it a good trade.

Added for those looking to use a two-point hasty sling - for that application, you cannot beat a Montana sling.  It won't be nearly as nice as a 1907 for position shooting, but for a quick brace you can't beat it. $36 at Brownell's, $30 if you have an FFL.

I recently bought a Remington 513T.
The Straight Shooter1907 sling on the Matchmaster was a little rough so I sent it off to Ron Brown, leather slingmeister for a refurbishment.
I also had him make me a new 1907 service sling. Turned out really nice and this thing will last two lifetimes. Herman Oak Leather.
Frogs by Waterbury Buckle. Parkerized oversized D rings.

Turner was the other I considered. Ron Brown was very responsive to my novice questions.

I'd never used a sling properly until I went to a CMP clinic.  The difference is amazing.  Maybe one of these years I'll get a rifle where I can actually use one.

I'll follow Dadams' comment again with recommending Ron Brown. I shoot in High Power competitions where slings are used in sitting and prone. I started off with a Turner sling but found it was spongey and more pliable than I wanted. Ron's slings are sturdy and thick, providing a tight lockdown when in position. I realize my purposes may differ from others, but there's my experience, FWIW.
