Night stand guns caliber and capacity

I won't disclose, but like Dolomite, I have many rounds in many mags for all of the firearms in our bedroom.

 

All guns are always loaded? You best believe this is true in my home.

Night stand gun is an FNP 45 with 15+1 rounds of Gold Dots with an extra mag loaded next to it. Also my carry gun is close by too, Glock 30 or LCR .357.

Beretta PX4 full size .40, 14 rounds 165grain Winchester STX hollow point that I bought from one of our resident LEO. Not his duty ammo of course. Two extra mags. I like the idea of the first shot being a longer pull double action if I should have to grab it after being awakened suddenly by my first line of defense, a 55 lb Shepperd / Akita mix. No light needed because I keep a light on in the front room all night. Keeps me from tripping over my first line of defense on the occasional 2:00 am trips to the bathroom and can't hurt as a burglar deterrent.

I maintain a 9 mm Shield with the 1 rd in the tube with a full 7 rd mag.and  next to it, a 8 rd mag with JHP. The wife has a S&W mdl 10 with 6 rds .in her night table.  We've discussed various tactics that would be applied if there ever came a time with intruders attempting to or have entered the home at night. I'm not that brave to attempt going down to the lower level to find the bad guy. The advantage is on their side. We feel that using the advantage of surprise is better. The bad guys would be surprised when they enter the stairway . If all goes well, they'll never reach the 2nd fl level. 

 

Why not keep the higher capacity magazine in the gun instead of using it as a spare?

I have 3 guns within an arms reach. Loaded and hot tubes and abck up magazines for each of them loaded with each gun. I sleep in a totally dark house with one double halogen lighting system that will be tripped soon as the bad guy/guys are within clear view of my bedroom and they should be blinded to anything around them and lighting them up so I can begin sending hot lead down rage in their direction. They will be lit up like the 4th of July. That will happen only if they can figure out how to get passed the out side motion lights that will light up all around my house and start dogs barking. Even if power is cut to house lights in house are on battery back up...............It will get very messy very quick........... :up:  :up:

A chihuahua that never sleeps, lit snake eyes on the 229 w 15 180 gr hp rounds. Other stuff strategically placed in case of hard takedown covert hostage switches through the house that go straight to metro.

I find that if I chamber a rd from the 8 rd mag and then replace the rd and try to put the mag back in, it does not seat properly.So I  end up with  8 rds.  If I put the full 7 rd mag in with a rd chambered, It will not seat properly , Then I have 7 rds.. Anyone else have that situation? I don't want to jam it in. Weird!

Sometimes it takes a bit more force to seat the mag, but something's wrong if it physically won't lock in with a round in the chamber.  One of my guns takes a modest whack to seat a full mag with a round chambered, but it runs just fine.

My carry guns are all semi-autos. My nightstand gun is a S&W 686 revolver.So six rounds of 357Mag before I would have to switch to other available options.

 

+1 Only difference is mine is 686+. That equals 7 rounds of 357 Magnum HPs!

I keep either a G20 or a G21 in my nightstand with a few extra loaded mags (if it's not in my nightstand then it's because I'm carrying it) but frankly, my pistol is only a backup to my 12ga pump and my 5.56 rifle.

 

I'd suggest that the axiom of "largest caliber you feel comfortable with and can shoot effectively" and as many mags/ammunition as you can applies in all situations, nightstand or out and about in public.

 

You never know when several thugs may break in (or a zombie hoard). :)

My side of the bed:

Beretta 92FS 9mm with 15+1 chambered rounds Federal Hydra Shok.

FN Five Seven with (5.7x28 VMAX) 20+1 chambered.

Wife's side of the bed:

Ruger Security Six 357 Magnum with some HP's.

S&W M&P Shield 40cal with full mag + 1 chambered of Federal Hydra Shok

I used to keep the Mossber 590 9 shot pump by the bed loaded with 00 Buck and Slugs (every other round 00 Buck, slug, 00 buck, slug, etc), but figured these pistols are enough.

I carry the FN 5.7x28 until my XDs 45acp get's back from the recall. Wife carries the S&W Shield 40 cal.

You made me think of something funny. lol

In case of zombie apocalypse, Barrett M107A1 clamped down to a table inline with the door and approximate area of center mass (head shot for zombies) and a string/wire to the bedside from the trigger.

I'm an incredibly deep sleeper. My GF doesn't get home from work until 02-0300 on many nights and I rarely even hear her.

 

My hope is that our home alarm going off will deter said criminal. If that doesn't work I have a Gen4 Glock 23 with a Streamlight TLR3. I'm debating on switching this to a Glock 21 I just purchased because I really don't care for the .40 caliber any more.

 

The GF has a Sig as well and we have discussed how we would react to different scenarios. I feel we are fairly prepared for most events.

My Glock 23 rides the nightstand, it has over 3000 perfect rounds through it without issue. I wouldn't mind switching to something else quiter in hopes of saving my hearing if fired numerous times inside the house. While I can't tell a difference between shooting 9/40/45 I think the 40 is louder w/ more flash. I once worried about an intruder having body armor but feel the continuous volley of fire will deter them out of the house if at least one round doesn't hit face, neck, groin, arm, or leg.

I have two cats that are each over 25 lbs. , if you are in my house in the dark you had better be petting them and if you are they are missing from my bed , and if they are I will be right behind them. Not in your best interest , I sleep like a feather , if something moves I'm awake. Say hello to my .12 gauge or .45.
