House votes to extend plastic gun ban

Recommended Posts

Is it even possible to make a FUNCTIONING  "plastic gun" that cannot be detected by X-ray?  A plastic/non-metal casing and components is one thing but what about the rest of the gun itself such as the barrel, firing pin, etc, etc.  I'm sure you could get by with non-metal parts for some of these components but all of them...I sort of doubt it.

I know there was one guy in the '80s who claimed he could do it but failed...then he popped up again around 2000 but still was never able to actually build an undetectable gun so, why do we need to ban something that doesn't exist?  It may happen someday but I'd be willing to bet we'll have phasers by then. LOL

When I entertained the idea of becoming a polymer engineer in 1989, I attended a class that consisted of guest engineers of various fields that came in to speak to the class about their fields. One of them worked for a company in Kansas City that was famous for manufacturing components for nuclear weapons. He told us that they had a polymer that was so hard that they had no tool that could cut it. If they have that then it is possible they could develop something that could take the pressures of a pistol round.

Defense distributed already posted a video of a single shot, reusable polymer pistol called the liberator. The only metal parts are the finish nail used as a firing pin and a metal piece added to make it detectable so as to abide by the law. The 3D printer file was downloaded i think 100,000 times before their site went offline. It's still available on many file sharing websites.

They voluntarily added the metal for compliance but I'm sure the law will keep the bad guys honest when it comes to their polymer guns. Another pointless feel good law in my opinion.
