Christmas came early! Santa made a stop at Dillon on the way.

Today I got my Christmas present from my wonderful wife and it has shown up in the form of a Dillon 650. I've got a turret press and am happy with it for small batches or more precise ammo but I shoot a fairly large amount of ammo and it just doesn't work for that. A friend who is also a member here has a Dillon that all my bulk ammo is loaded on. We have a lot of casting and other projects that we'd like to work on so not having to load every time i'm over there will allow some time for all that.

I've put the word out amongst the family that Outpost gift certificates would be great so I plan to use that towards conversion kits and so on. Here's my problem, my bench is pretty full so until I get the shop finished I may be stuck running the trusty turret.

Congratulations! Once this 300 Blackout is built, I'm gonna have to start looking into reloading.

We're already loading Blackout as well as casting for it so when you get it together and want to get into the loading for it or just need ammo you can come on down and learn and load you some up.

I may take you up on that offer, because I know almost zero about about reloading.

Well... Color me blue with envy...

I am seriously thinking of adding a 650 to the mix for all my small primer stuff and leaving my 550 set up for large primer ammo.

Well i'd be happy to help you out with it and you could be loading yourself some ammo in the process. Just let me know when you get to the point of wanting to learn, needing 300 ammo or both and we'll figure on a time.

This will be my first go round with a 650. All of my Dillon experience has been with a 550 and I really like that model. I like the idea of auto indexing but I hate the idea of auto indexing, I have pros and cons for each but what I really wanted was case feeder ability which they both have so I almost went with a 550 and then I realized that the case feeder setup for it is only capable of running pistol cases where the 650 is capable of rifle and pistol. That was to biggest factor in my choice. I'm looking forward to getting it all set up and running for sure.

Are you using lees 230gr mold?

I've got one but haven't loaded any bullets from it yet because I haven't gotten the powder coating under way yet. I don't figure there is any need in trying to shoot a straight boat tail cast bullet since the "boat tail" is what you try to avoid with cast bullets. I don't see where it would be any different than casting flat back bullets and having rounded shoulders for the gas to cut around. I'm hoping that the powder coating will cure this. I have also got a Lee 155gr AK mold as well.

Yep, a rifle case feeder and a powder check would really be helpful when it was time to crank out a bunch of .223

Congrats on the new press, man. Sorry to hear you can't play with it yet. That would drive me crazy.

I have a 650 set up for 9mm and a 550 set up for .45 acp. If you like the 550, I think you'll love the 650, especially after you add the case feeder. There's no words for how awesome it is to knock out 300 rounds in about 15 minutes on your way out the door for the shooting range.

I'd say i'll add a powder check at some point but i've gotten used to having to keep an eye on it so i'll be okay without it for a while. I'd say a bullet tray, strong mount and electric case feeder will be the first upgrades.

I'd say it will get the best of me and i'll have to set it up temporarily. If I don't hide it from myself there will be no stopping me from setting it up somewhere lol.
