I'm been really thinking about building a mauser in 300 wm or 300wsm i know a lot would have to be done with it but i love mauser actions. I know some people think its a sin to build one but i don't but a german mauser or one in pretty number matching shape yes i don't think it should be mess with but a rougher one i have no problem with but i would keep all the original parts or if i could find a bare action. i know a savage or Mossberg would be cheaper but I've had a thing for mauser for awhile and i would love to have a custom one thinks

You'd need to open up the bolt face, and probably do some alteration to the magazine as well, unless you get a commercial magnum Mauser action. It can be done with a military rifle, but requires some extra work. I once had a 375 Holland and Holland Sako That had a standard large ring Mauser action. It had a notch milled out of the front receiver ring in order to accommodate the longer cases.

A 30-06, or even better, a 35 Whelen would only require a rebarrel, as the bolt and action will readily accept these cases.

Finding a smith to do custom work like this is getting harder and harder and barrels are getting expensive. Not to be a killjoy, a Weatherby Vanguard S2 can be had in magnum calibers for about the price of installing a mauser barrel these days.

They are guaranteed to shoot under MOA out of the box. They also have an adjustable trigger that you can tinker with and a hinged floorplate.

You can get a Savage for less, but no accuracy guarantee. You might get lucky and get a MOA Savage out of the box. But the Vanguard is a sure bet.

I've been thinking i like the mauser but my favorite gun which i like and own one is the m70 Winchester i have one in 30-06 and its been perfect gun but its a special gun to me it was my first so i like to update to a new one. If i could find a post 64 m70 in 308 could i rebarrel it and open up the feed rail and the bolt? I know they make them now but to me their not Winchester. sub moa accuracy really don't matter because i just want a good longer range deer rifle Edited by jrbaker90
