Article is retarded

Using that logic, the author is suggesting that police only get shot or suffer serious injury if they work in a densely populated area.  I would bet you a cheeseburger that plenty of LEO's here could poke holes in that all day long.

Why do they need "military style" (I always love that generic terminology) equipment?  For the same reason you can have 100 round drums for an AK, because they can.

The militaration of domestic law enforcement agencies has been happening for decades, it's just picking up pace inorder to keep President Obama's campaign promise to (paraphrasing) "create a domestic police force which is just as powerful, just as big & just as well funded as our armed forces".

The ultimate purpose/reason of this is of course just speculation & guess work, but history is ripe with examples of what can & does happen when this sort of domestic law enforcement build-up does occur, none of which (at least to my knowledge) had been for benign purposes/reasons. I work for a smaller dept near Memphis, and I've already pulled my military style assault rifle once during my shift tonight. I am also wearing a vest. Look up the officer down memorial page, and you might be surprised that many of the murdered officers come from small departments. I can see the argument against tanks and helicopters, but I can't believe he is speaking about vests. I used to think the Rutherford Institute had some good goals. I am not impressed after reading this article.

Why do they buy this stuff?

The same reason you and I would buy this stuff....If they have the budget and can get a good deal on it, WHY NOT? ;)

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Police forces/law enforcement agencies are not supposed to be military units. However, from my perspective; it's the mindset, mission and tactics employed that determines whether an agency is acting as a "military" unit or civilian law enforcement, not the equipment.  Will the police use "military grade" equipment to just go in and kill people with little or no regard to collateral damage and casualties or will they use such equipment to be safe and to respond to the level of force they are encountering?

I'm sure most of us remember the bank robbery in LA years ago when the robbers were equipped with body armor and automatic weapons while the police had shotguns and revolvers and were hopelessly outgunned. Would anyone here suggest that LE should be limited to .38 SPC wheel guns and pump 12ga shotguns today?

As with most technology (be it electronic, mechanical or anything else), it's how it's used and who uses it that really matters isn't it? It seems to me that a corrupt, out of control LEO or a corrupt, out of control LE Agency is going to be dangerous to citizens and citizen's rights regardless of what kind of equipment they have access to; that is what we should be concerned with...not what kind of vehicles or helicopters they have.

If I was the police, I would want a mini gun mounted on the appropriate vehicle. You never know when some rabid squirrel is gonna require the full force of the law. :)

Yes you are.

As old as you are and you've not noticed everyday in the last 20 years that our liberties and freedoms are eroding precipitously to where people are not recognizing our country any longer. And then add a socialist/communist POTUS the last five years with an leftist agenda of America emulating Europe (a continent that embraced Marxism, Facism, and Socialism), destroying the economy with unsustainable debt, high unemployment, government controlled healthcare that will kill jobs and the middle class, weakening the military, infringement of 2nd A, trampling of Constitution, Democrat Senate "nuclear option", executive fiats bypassing legislation, stacking courts with progressives to override legislation, using bureaucracies such as EPA and others to further burden and stiffle our freedoms, a DOJ that is corrupt, an American exceptionalism apologetic foreign policy of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood and easing up on sanctions with a nuclear ambitious Iran and creating tensions with our long time ally Israel, domestic drones flying over our country, NSA listeniing to your calls and reading your e-mails, militarization of civilian forces besides the military, and then you get a clear picture of America changing into Amerika.

If there is not a quick course correction for the direction our country is heading, then in ten to twenty years at most you will feel the heavy chains of government bondage. Some people will argue that they already feel the heavy hand of government bondage. Even the great American Republic is not exempt from collapsing and morphing into an authoritarian state such as communism. History is a good indicator that history repeats itself, and right now our nation is as vulnerable as it can be to collapsing into an authoritarian state. Get your head out of the sand and maybe be you will see what's happening in our country daily. Edited by ThePunisher

No I was not picking.   We have our differences for sure.  But I don't really disagree with you.    Your time frame is what I was asking about.  10 to 20 years sounds reasonable.
