Year of Manufacture for Marlin Lever Actions

I've recently seen some discussion on how to determine the year of manufacture of Marlin lever guns.

I'd recommend you carefully read all the options when you check here:

Quick & simple - just make sure you input into the correct date range.

Hope this is beneficial to someone.

Not for all of them by no means but generally speaking for the ones that are found for sale it is a math problem.

simply subtract the first two digits from the serial # from 2000 & there is the date of manufacture.

Also this is mostly for leverguns made after 1972 I think 69-71 the first 2 numbers are the date of manufacture & all these will have the numbers on the upper tang of the rifle.

Before that they are mainly but not confined to the lower tang & usually start with a letter.

Once Remington bought them they started putting the serial # on the left side of the receiver.

go over to the marlin firearms forum they have a chart that has the years dates for the lever guns.  it is based off the first two numbers/letter of the serial number.

Look on the barrel for the stamp.

JM =  real marlin

REM = remington

JM barrels still put on most rifles made in MA after Remington bought them, and apparently are still JM on some guns even after Marlin left the MA plant with North Haven still on the barrels that were left over. Also, there seem to be barrels that were actually made in Ilion that had North Haven on them before they left that plant.

Just depends on how purist you want to be about the "Remlin" or "Marlington" thing. Only way to know for sure to get a "pure" Marlin seems to be by getting one from pre 12/2007 when Remington bought them.  'Course, saying Mayfield, KY or Ilion, NY on them erases all doubt for the new ones. :)

And btw, most of the "remlin" proofs are "REP" or "RP", though I have a transition Model 60 that shows North Haven, but with RE marking.

Also also, have read several places that sometime in 2012, the new barreled rifles have switched to the Remington date codes rather than the Marlin system.
