They've Gone From Lying to Extortion

Recommended Posts

The sinister methods the federal government uses to turn our pockets inside out has trickled down to municipalities as well. I just got a propaganda flier in the mail saying if we don't vote to raise Maryville  local sales tax a half cent, we'll get a 32-cent bump in property tax. Here's their pitch:

Over the last five years, City Council postponed a large number of building repairs in the Maryville school system. During a difficult economic period, this was the right thing to do in order to keep the budget balanced and to avoid raising property taxes. If we continue to delay some of these needed repairs, it will cost taxpayers much more than if we fix them now.

So how do they explain the construction of multimillion-dollar schools in the area if they can't find the money to fix the ones we have? I remember going to class in double-wide trailers when the school got too small or the roof leaked.  Kid's needs have radically changed in the last 60 years, I suppose. But we weren't taught by Stalin-loving Common Core geniuses, either. And is their promise of no property tax increase as good as Obama's pledge that we can keep our heathcare plan?

They go on to say that they want to beef up security in the schools "because recent events in other communities have reminded us of the need to make our school facilities safer for students and teachers." So we also need to pony up because of the tragic consequences pampered nutjobs have inflicted upon leftist-run schools which teach that a drawing or even a hand gesture of evil guns will warp a child for life. Note to the Maryville City Council: Our town ain't Sandy Hook. Kids here learn to shoot and hunt before they even know the difference of what's between the legs of boys and girls.

Thanks for letting me vent.....and if anyone's curious, I'm voting no.

Interesting. I went to the local city council work session last night and heard a presentation for a new 34 million dollar middle school. My guess is that it's a 40 million dollar project.

Those that aspire to lead us obviously feel we are able to pay whatever they want to extort from us.

That's one of the truths of politics. No matter what the background he /she comes from; the vast majority of politicos seem to immediately think that just because they want something...we, the people who put them in office, should and will pay any amount for all manner of items they come up with.

Ya gotta love the way they approached that decision gun sane. You either give them a 1/2 cent sales tax which taxes everyone or if you don't let them have it they punish just the property owners with a tax. Your right about the extortion but the Property owners could also scream discrimination for unfair taxation because every one that will be using taxed dollars will not be benefiting from them. Not everyone has school age children or any children for that matter................jmho

Notice how cleverly they say that property taxes haven't been raised to repair schools.  We've gotten sticker shock every time we've opened the annual notice from the county appraiser since we moved here ten years ago.  I'd love to sell our house for the amount they say it's worth.and live in a houseboat or trailer someplace where no one can find us.  The wife and I are childless so we put no burden on the school system at all, yet we pay the same as a couple with five kids in the indoctrination camps that they call public schools.

I'd suggest going to the next council meeting and asking how much waste fraud and abuse did they stop last year?  My guess not a single penny...

Then remind them that the hard economic times are still here, and the council should take a much closer look at the city budget and figure out how to make do with what they have...  if not the people might find some smarter council members who not only can make due with the current budget but find plenty of waste to cut on top of that.
