2014 Off Season Support Group Deer Season Thread

Recommended Posts

i started my hunt very optimistic on my little 6acres at the house. I had pics on my trail cam of the deer moving through every day between 0600 and 0800. the wind was in my face all morning and nice and crisp. then around 0700 one of my neighbors decided that opening day was the day to zero his rifle 15 shots later i gave up and went in to make coffee. oh well maybe tonight will be better.

That dang north wind is rough. I went this morning until 9:00 and didn't see anything. I usually stay out at least till 11:00. I only heard about 3 shots this morning, and that's strange for opening morning. All the shots were at least 2 miles away.

That wind ate me alive! I told my SIL and my Son via text I was climbing down at 9 because I was cold and miserable. At 8:58 a doe walked within 25 yards of my stand and I put her down for a dirt nap. Was out of my stand by nine!

My whole weekend got screwed. As usual. The wind woulda been swirlin' purdy bad where my blind is set up, so it don't bother me that much that I'm missin' it today and tomorrow.

They're callin' for Winter weather 'round here Mon. and that may get'm to movin' good. Maybe I can get out there after I drop my grandson off at school. My blind is only 5 minutes or so from the school.

Anytime you can get in the woods is a good time to get in the woods!

If anyone plans on making any spicy venison sausage, I'd be willing to buy some.

Next big deer I get I'm going to make a lot of sausage. I won't sell it to you, I'll give you some. What do you have in mind for "spicy venison sausage"?

I been sitting in my stand since before daylight. Saw 7 does and a 3pt between 8:00 and 10:00am but I'm not meat hunting for a while. I've been waiting on a good N wind to hunt this stand so I just bundled up and dealt with it. I did sleep for an hour but I only slept 2 last night, went to the George Jones tribute concert. Not much shooting round today.

JWC; it's raw out there today. My Son and SIL went back out and my Son just sent me a picture of a big doe he just got. So I guess they're moving right now.

That would be amazing and greatly appreciated.

Someone sold me some a few years ago, and I loved it. I just use it as a breakfast sausage.

Now we're talking, I love spicey breakfast sausage. Give me a bit to get me another good deer and get some make.

So I made it to the stand 30 minutes later than I planned due to driver showing up at work late. Pull in and park in my usual spot, and glance in the woods and there stood 8 freaking deer!!! Dang you late driver!!! By the time I got out and got my gun, as quietly as possible, and eased in the woods to see if they just moved deeper in, they were gone. Wind+cold=what y'all said earlier! I was fine till the last hour and my feet and ears got cold. Love it though, lot less leaves on the trees and cold weather, that's what gun season is! Only heard one gun shot all afternoon.

Dave, I left out the most important part. It wasn't just that there were deer in the woods, they were around the tree I marked as 20 yards from my stand! It was still cool to see them though. Gonna get some sleep and hit it again tomorrow. Edited by rugerla1

Dropped a doe this morning, was back home by 7:30.

Started out a as a busted hunt, first time heading to the farm i hunt with my father in law this year, walked out the ridge towards the ladder stand and....it was gone. I walked around for 20 minutes looking, knew i was in the right spot due to some landmarks, including a piece of tin sticking out of the ground that isn't going to move. Finally stopped and stood next to a tree waiting for daylight, still couldn't spot the stand so was debating heading to the stand over the field when i spied a doe walking up over the edge of the ridge. She stopped about 50 yards away and i dropped her, walked over to her and found the stand. FIL moved it to the opposite side of the ridge and wrapped camo netting all over it. :-)
