2014 Off Season Support Group Deer Season Thread

They were moving good this morning. I saw either 3 or 4 does. They was moving around back in the woods. 3 bucks. A 6 point, small 8 point 14", and a shooter 8 point. Was gonna shoot the shooter buck and my rifle wouldn't fire. It was like the safety was still on. I checked to make sure that I did turn it off, and I did. I stopped him with a grunt twice and couldn't pull the trigger either time. I looked at it pretty good when I came in and couldn't find anything wrong. Could it possibly be effected by the cold?

I wouldn't think it was cold enough to affect it. I've had gun malfunctions in real cold while duck hunting but I'm talking very cold where it never thought about getting above freezing. Once had ice froze between back of trigger and trigger guard. That was a bitch.

He was actually a funny little guy.  He would feed in the middle of the field and all of a sudden BOLT 0-60 high tailing it into the woods!  Then would come back a few minutes later eating in the middle of the field again and BOLT back into the woods.  LOL!  He was skittish!

Well I went this morning sat til about ten,and didn't see a thing. I wasn't going this afternoon but my neighbor told me was going, so I changed my mind. Went and set in the hunting house and a few minutes before four a bunch of turkeys come out, I text my neighbor turkeys, he asked how many? I text back about twelve or so, he texted back don't get an itchy trigger finger, lol. So I watch them for about 20 mins. they wander up to me like I was calling 'em, got to about 35 yds. then turned and went straight away from me. There were 6 toms and 12 hens in the bunch, then here they come 6 does. So I text him, he text back I don't hear any shooting. I look back and there are three more and before I can text him, two more, eleven in all. So I've got about 16 or so turkeys and eleven deer in the same field. I watch for a couple of mins. trying to decide on which of the does I want, pic up the range finder and they are 195 yds. chip shot for the 06. Pick one out pick up the rifle ease it out the window, flip the safety off, ease the trigger. Click, dang forgot to chamber a round when I got to the box. So I chamber a round and try again this time everything goes as it should. Bang, all the deer run off, and the turkeys just scatter a bit, wander around for at least a min. or so before they leave. Walked on down there before it gets to late, and she had ran back the way they came from, she only made it about 50 yds. so thats number four. Going back in the morning to try and get one with .44 Mag SBH.

Thanks Dave! I'm pretty sure it's the biggest doe I've ever killed. She is big for the area I'm hunting, even the ranger that stopped by said "Dang, most of the park doe's are skinny. You got a fatty!"

I'd love to say that I turned her lungs to mush Dave, because I thought I had. Seems I didn't take into consideration the ballistics when I shot her. I have my scope set at 1 inch high at 100 yards and I shot her at 20 yards, and went for a heart shot. Went through both of her shoulders, and had to finish it off when I found her. If I'd had the money for all the processing, I could have got my 3/day limit in the first hour I was out there. (Really need to learn to do my own!) I had 10 does, old and young around me at 7-7:30. I let them all pass to see if the 6 pointer I saw New Years Day would come out behind them. He didn't and they did a u-turn and came right back in front of me. I decided that this fat booger was too good to pass since the buck may not even come out. I'm so pumped up to have one more for the freezer Dave!

Buddy If I lived closer I'd process her for you with no charge of course!

I don't get into detailed cuts and mostly stick to roast, stew, ground meat and slice up the blackstrap but if that would be enough to satisfy your butchering needs I'd be glad to help you on the next one. I'm not great at it but I do get it done.

Thank KM!
Armalite AR10 with Ballistic Silvertip. Little overkill ammo wise, soft nose is more than sufficient for what I need. Just had them in the ammo box so I decided to use them this year.

OK, I don't want to sound dumb here (well maybe so) but what caliber is an AR10?

I have stopped using Ballistic Silvertips.  They sure get the job done but boy do they make a mess.   I loved my AR10.  Wish I had not sold it off.

rugerla1 it's kinda late in the game but I live right over in MJ and have a grinder and all that stuff and space to do it. if you bring them we can butcher them in my garage. I'd be glad to help. If it's as cold as they say this weekend I'll even fire up a Redi-heater. I just hate for you to have to restrict the number you want to shoot just because of the cost of processing.

Yep it's supposed to get awful cold. I'd stand out in it to help you clean the deer but I sure can't offer an indoor place to do it. JWC it sounds like you have the perfect setup!

Good luck to any of you that are going this weekend. I'm gonna try it in the morning if the wind is calm. I 've been seeing bucks chasing does. I saw a shooter Sat. but, couldn't get a good shot. Then Wed. 2 bucks that looked to be 2 1/2 yr. olds.
