Dickson Gun Auction yesterday

Anyone else go to this yesterday? They didn't have much I was interested in. The couple that I was went higher than I wanted to pay. I did end up buying a cheapy gun just to have around. There were a few that would have been interesting if I had cash to blow.

 

I found it interesting that there were almost no "ugly black guns". Anyone know if they were selected out beforehand? Mostly just regular shotguns and rifles in the long-guns. I also found it amusing that the wooden stocked SKS went for 150 but the couple that had folding stocks went for north of 300 apiece.

 

I don't think there were many bargains to be had, particularly when you factor in the background check ($30).

JMO, but public gun auctions don't seem to bring good values out. Last one I went to was in the early 90s, and it was pathetic what some people would bid up a gun to.

 

I just stopped going. Not saying you can't find a "buy" now and then, but I tired of all the trouble involved to get one.

Been to a bunch of gun auctions and have never bought a gun. Last year the old lady that lived in a house across the pond from me passed away and they held a 2 day auction of everything in the house. Her husband (who had passed away a couple of years earlier) was clearly a gun guy and shooter, because on the Friday preview they had about 50 or 60 guns. Word got around and on Saturday morning there were probably 100 people on the street in lawn chairs and 90 of them waiting for the guns to come up. On Friday they wouldnt tell anyone what they expected to get for the guns, but finally, when they did start coming up around 3 o'clock, the first gun up was an old Pietta Navy that you could still order from Cabelas for around $130. Opening the bidding at $300! All day long they were saying "if anyone would like to make an offer on the guns, come on up and let us know", people did and one guy sitting two chairs away made an offer for all of them and everyone was turned down. Not one gun sold that day. Later at the end of the auction I walked up to the guy holding the stuff up and asked him if he knew what these guns were worth? Answer: As much as we can get for them, thats why people like this hire us. (Got a point I suppose). He told me they sold guns like that every week and have been doing it for 30 years. So SOMEONE is buying auctioned guns at high prices, just not me and other gun owners I know. But I have seen people bid high on pure junk, crap that should be in the dumpster because they get caught up in that bidding process, and some of those auctioneers really know how to sell.

 

But Estate sales are an entirely different story altogether, if you can get to them early enough, before the people who show up to buy entire estates in one fell swoop. And those guys usually are not late to the party.

This sounds like a typical gun auction. There is almost always far too much testosterone in the air to get a decent deal. I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys pay over retail, not including the buyers fee or background check.

Fortunately no buyer's fee. Just got back from collecting the gun and no mag so even more money. No doubt I did not get a good deal but not too terribly bad so meh.

Typically gun auctions offer no real deals. However I do find that "junky" or less expensive items bring more often more than you could buy them at the store, but higher end items sometimes go for a good value.

I'd have probably bid but I already have one.
