I'm with Oh Shoot... why deprive the government of the money it needs to continue subsidizing all of the deadbeats?  The government has always been a faithful and responsible steward of our tax dollars.

And today, the US Supreme Court agreed with you.  Effectively nationwide, not just TN.

They'll never do it, but I wish e-tailers like Amazon would just stop doing business with ANYONE in states like this. It might give the populace something to gripe to their representatives about. Put out some TV ads saying that "we aren't selling to anyone on NY because of this law passed by these people (name them)." I realize they're probably contractually obligated to some stuff in the state and blah blah blah, but in a perfect world that would be such a beautiful response to crap like this.

Amazon has yet to make  hardly made a profit*.  The probability of that ever happening is now significantly smaller.  They know it, otherwise they would have not been fighting this in court.  Ponzi scheme, house of cards, and now a bureaucratic behemoth.

* a bit more perspective on their business model's profit (except for Bezos) - http://go.bloomberg.com/market-now/2013/01/23/apples-profit-vs-amazons-promise/

another more recent article  - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/10245630/Amazon-is-Britains-most-influential-retailer-and-it-doesnt-even-make-a-profit.html

and one more - http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-01-08/amazons-jeff-bezos-doesnt-care-about-profit-margins - if the cash flow stops (.i.e. sales driven local by tax structure), they are screwed.

They bought into a short-term solution ("collect taxes in a few states until they won the court case") for a long-term problem.  So, yes, they share in the blame.

I bet Tony Hsieh is grinning like a possum tonight.  He made his $.  Amazon bought him/Zappos out a few years back.

Well technically Amazon doesn't own any businesses in TN...  Amazon contracts with a seperate business to provide distribution from warehouses in TN.  This is a critical difference...  but these businesses have NEVER had to collect sales tax before.

I'll be getting rid of my Amazon prime membership as well.

Joe Average needs to understand that Amazon now has distribution centers in Tennessee.  They are a TN business.  Ergo, TN residents must pay sales tax.

Joe Average also needs to be aware of who he votes for.  Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker are huge supporters of Internet sales tax.  Thanks to them you'll soon start paying taxes on all online purchases, regardless of the origin, and it will not be voluntarily.

This has nothing to do with a Prime membership,  I like it for free two day shipping plus the free books and Video library at $79.00 a year its a steal. We have four Kindles alone. Keep the kids happy and cheaper than Netflix.

I'm stationed in Texas and Amazon charges tax there. I'm still buying stuff cheaper with the tax than I can find anywhere else.

You people saying that are nuts.

Every place that sells on line that has a physical presence in TN has to charge sales tax. Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, and CMT Tactical are places I've bought from that come immediately to mind.

The only reason Amazon hasn't till now was due to a delayed deal with the state to get more of their distribution centers here.

I already cut down on my buying from Newegg and Buy.com once they got a presence in TN and started charging the tax. This will only drive more business to Chinese sellers on ebay and the like, sad to say.

I got no beef with Amazon. I understand how the game works and as far as no sales tax goes, it was good while it lasted.

I'm not upset with Amazon for introducing the sales tax since they now have distribution centers in TN and that is the way the law works for better or worse. However, it should be noted that Amazon are pushing for the internet sales tax (after all, why should anyone else enjoy the advantages they did while building their business?). They are attempting to pull the ladder up behind them and I think that's contemptible.

biggrin.gif If you are shopping a Chinaman on EBay against Newegg; tax isn’t going to change your mind.

Your tires cost 500 clams each? Drive an earthmover to work or something? :)

Heck, those chinamen will send me things for less than the shipping would be here. I have a suspicion that the USPS is being taken for a ride.

Nope. Just buying five 35" Toyo mud terrains for a land cruiser. Last set was $1200. The dollar is headed south quickly.

Amazon isn't charging tax on orders from market sellers outside TN so all my amazon purchases in the last 3 days have still been tax free, most just ship slower. It just takes an extra click to peruse the "more buying choices" section to determine whether saving the tax or having the faster amazon fulfillment is worth the difference.

Thanks for sharing, I didn't consider or think of this.
