So, I really, really wish to startup a blog/website. I've posted about this before. I want to do it. Primarily, I"ll be posting about carrying, guns, "light" politics (mostly related to guns), and possibly interesting technology (innovative computers being introduced, etc). I will ALSO be posting about budgeting and finance, and ways to save money.

Just looking for innovative .com's. That's all. I want it to be something relatively short and memorable.

EDIT: IT would help if perhaps you used something like http://www.name.com to test whether it is already taken.

Annual domain leases are cheap. Come up with a bunch of names and buy all of them that you can. Link them all to your site, and use subdomains which are usually free.

Coming up with a good name that will attract attention is pretty hard. Since there are millions of websites out there that are dead because of it.

You will find a lot of the names are "owned" and people want a pretty penny to release them.

I would suggest using one of the many Domain Name Generators like this one. This particular generator will give you a list of available domain names based on key words and where they are available.

use http://www.godaddy.com/

to search for domains to be certain they are available.  Just because they don't come up in IE doesn't mean someone isn't sitting on it.

I think I heard Godaddy goes in for preregistering searched domains. You may want to use a different service.

I figure most of them do.  Network solutions is the only one I have actually brought one form and that was years ago when there wasn't many options.

I get bummed out when i search for something that should no no meaning for anyone and find it is held by a group that just buys up domains and tries to sell them for allot of money.

When they sit on them for years and never use them for anything other then for the purpose of resale.

Yes. They'll snap up any expired domains too. My wife had one that expired about 5 years ago and I believe it's still being held by squatters. The company I worked for ended up paying $5000 to one of those a-holes.

When I want to check, I use WHOIS. But there are several registrars who don't play the front running game. Domainmonger is a small registrar and I've never had an issue with them.

There's some good info (including how to use whois for Windows) here

I've always used name.com for checking, but using WHOIS is probably foolproof. Assuming that nobody here is one of those people that buys up domains, I have a few ideas:

frugalgunner.com

thefrugalgunner.com

conservativegunner.com

theconservativegunner.com

I was trying to think of a play on "Cowboy 2.0", insinuating that I carry a gun like a cowboy, but in a 21st century setting. I couldn't think of anything.

My main concern is that while I like a few of the above examples, they are long BUT easy to remember.
