RIP Jerry Reed

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/02/obit.reed.ap/

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Jerry Reed, a singer who appeared in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, has died of complications from emphysema at age 71, his longtime booking agent said Tuesday.

Carrie Moore-Reed, who is no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday morning.

Reed was a gifted guitarist who later became a songwriter, singer and actor.

As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, he had a string of hits that included "Amos Moses," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "East Bound and Down," and "The Bird."

In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, "Gator" "Hot Stuff" and "High-Ballin'.

Through a friend, I was able to get Jerry Reed to sign a copy of Smokey and the Bandit for my brother-in-law last year. By all accounts from this friend, Jerry was a really nice guy and happy to do it. You don't find many celebrities these days willing to even smile for their fans without a paycheck. Jerry will be missed.

Being a member of the CAAS (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society), we hold Jerry Reed in high regards.

Chet Gave himself the title "CGP" which stands for Certified Guitar Player....before he died he decided to give this title out to a guitar player each year at the CAAS Convention, held each summet in Nashville at the Sheraton. Three men were awarded this honor by "Mister Guitar" before his passing.....one of those me was Jerry Reed.

Jerry you will be missed, but I am sure the good Lord is enjoying you and Chester doing some picking and grinning in the clouds.
