Being a pistol kinda guy, I really liked the bottom row of pistols.

Not only funny, but pretty darn close to true... 'cept for the Glock, of course.

Gonna be a sad day when they retire the M2.

I dont think it will retire for a long time, especially now that they have the A2 with fixed headspace and timing. I never had a problem setting headspace and timing but Im sure fixed makes it a whole lot easier, and ready.

With our dumbed down military standards today, headspace and timing is impossible to expect Soldiers to do. During the course of Iraq and Afghanistan you would be frigging amazed at how many I came by who sat behind that .50 and had no idea how to operate it, never test fired it or had any real training. They think they can just slap a barrel on it, load it up and go, until they get their ass handed to them and wonder why the gun didnt work. Of course, it's the .50's fault because its a piece of junk, just like their M16 is at fault when it doesn't work. Can't tell you how much I heard that from soft skill fobbits.

But in regards to retiring it, I've seen stuff over the past decade regarding a modular weapon they were looking to replace the .50 with. Much lighter in weight and could swap from a .50 to a 25mm. I don't know if that was ever scrapped for good, but it sounds interesting enough.

I saw that too. March of last year I took some guys from MSGO down to Shelby to check out some things at the invitation of the LTC of my old unit. One of the things they covered was the M2A2 and how great it was (With fixed HS and timing). Told by the Colonel that was what they did in lieu of replacing every M2 with the new modular crew served. but I did see where a Marine unit in Iraq got to test the new mod weapon. Had it on mil.com, and from everything I read about the period they used it, it was a great gun, saved a lot of weight, and IIRC not only fired 50 but could also fire grenades.

I had a similar problem in my first TC position. The 60 didnt carry an M2, it carried an M85. I thought it was a POS, no one could get past 3 rounds without a stoppage. First time down range, 2 rounds stoppage,l 3 rounds, stoppage, over and over. 1SG gets up on my tank, looks at my 50, asks "you afraid to get this 50 dirty or something?' (Top was a VN Vet, Americal Division), grabs my grease can, and packs the 50 full of grease says "now go shoot". That 85 sung, from that point on, never went down range without it packed full of grease and never had another problem with the 85. M2 never had a problem when it was set right, any issues were always soldier headspace.

Now you want to talk about an absolute, total, POS MG. Went through basic on A3 and had M240's. When I got to my first unit, they had just transitioned from the A2 to the A3, but still had the M219. Only used them for a month before the 240's came.

M219. Biggest, most worthless, lousy, POS weapon I ever layed a hand on. They might as well have mounted a single shot blunderbuss in the coax mount and no need to disassemble, just shoot it and it would fall apart.

I'd have to take out a 2nd mortgage for the ammo to shoot it. I've shot my fair share though in the past. I think it'll be more sad due to the history of the weapon and longevity. Kinda neat that my Grandfathers, great uncles, uncles and dad all worked the same machine gun over the past 70-80 years in various theaters.
