My Dad left me his coin collection, and I need some help figuring out what I have on my hands. I'm also interested in starting to invest in silver. I need a honest, reputable, competent coin guy somewhere near Nashville.

Anybody know a guy?

The Coin Purse in Green Hills.  I have had some good dealings with them, buying and selling, but have not used them in a couple of years.  Whenever this question comes up, several members here recommend them.

If he left you a decent sized coin collection, you got your investment already started for you. Most everything you

need to know from some coin collector is how much he wants for his stuff. Some may charge to appraise a collection,

and others may give you a free appraisal assuming you are going to sell to them. Depends what you want. I wouldn't

waste my time on a dealer unless I just wanted to get rid of the collection. Plenty of information on the internet.

You have to remember, just like any other business, a coin dealer has to make a profit and won't give you what retail

market value is, so if they give you a price, it's either a purchase price, or you will pay for an appraisal fee. Personally,

I would inventory all the coins and do my own research. You'll probably get better answers and spend less money.

Buying specific coins, or bulk? Bullion? Unless you understand the intrinsic and extrinsic value of metals, you might as

well be playing the stock market. Please understand the value is in the metal and not the paper dollar you paid for it with.

The reason I say that is I have bought a bit of metal and I understand it. I have paid much higher prices than current

markets, and much lower. If you get in he game of all the adverts about owning gold or silver, pay very little attention

to the ads and do your own research. I have no regrets for any of my purchases because I am buying to hold it, like

Fort Knox was intended to.
