I just picked up a Smithy 4506 .45ACP in a trade.  This is a tank, from the heft and the handling but it fits my hand fine....plus it's a .45 American steel! :usa: Anyone familiar with them? Are there things to look out for? I love the decocker feature and adjustable sights...can't wait to shoot it. I will post picks after coffee and biscuits...gotta recharge my battery too.......

My Dad used to have a 645. It was also a tank but quite possibly the most accurate gun I've ever shot. The only down side was the takedown/cleaning process involved a lot more parts. Otherwise it was a great gun!

Back in the 90s guys were converting to Single action and using them in USPSA competition when the 745 was hard to get

good serviceable pistols  my dad bought an oversized ambi for his 745 so some custom parts were available though not sure now some 20 years later

if the accuracy disappears it usually means a frame rail has split my brothers 745 did that (many many rounds over that frame though) and S&W traded it out for an M&P .45 since they are long discontinued  he is happy

get you a shoulder rig, Ray Bans and a leisure jacket and you can "Don Johnson" it at the range  later Miami Vice episodes armed Crockett with one

Welcome to the world of the "Bad Cop Gun".  Just think about how many "bad cops" on tv shows and in movies have use a 4506. Street Kings, The Shield, Training Day, the list goes on!

3rd gen smiths are great guns. I need to add one to my battery eventually but I think I want a 10mm.  Enjoy your gun :D

I prefer the Miami Vice pilot epsiode look and rock that with my Sig P220 :D

So many great 45s too little time to collect and shoot them all!

There were some S&W 4566 Tactical at GT's for $349 last week. They were rough Chattanooga PD trade ins.

I looked back at this thread thinking it was a 5906 thread but it wasn't. A friend of mine that works for Honolulu Police Department called me today to wish me a happy Thanksgiving. After a few minutes of catching up he said they are getting Glocks, most likely G 17 Gen4's. HPD is going away from S&W after nearly 100 years of S&W use. While the SWAT has had Sig 226 in 40 for awhile the 20 year old 5906 will be fazed out after the first of the year. I almost went to work for HPD with a few friends when I got out of the Army many years ago, I remember the 5906's and would really like to have one of the old HPD guns. As big of a Glock fan as I am, it's almost sad to see the old 3rd gen Smiths go away. HPD was one of the last agencies still using them. They had S&W model 15 before the 5906 up until about 1993.
