New AR mock up

Recommended Posts

So I've been buying some parts here and there to build my second AR and just got most of what I need to finish it off. Still needs optics and mounts, maybe a bipod, but close so far. I went a little over my budget on this one but I got what seem to be some pretty great components.

NFA polymer lower. Some love em, some hate em. I like mine fine especially for range toys.

Mystery BCG charging handle and Upper. Bought these from a vendor here and have no idea who made them TBH.

Magpul BUIS.

YHM smooth free float forearm, rifle length.

JP Enterprises low profile adjustable gas block.

WMD nitromet gas tube.

AR Stoner 20" 1/8 heavy fluted barrel with 5R rifling.

I haven't really built it yet but did put a few things together for a crappy cell phone pic.

Let me know what you all think of my choices for parts, I'm curious for some feedback from those more knowledgable than myself.

Oh, not sure what stock to go with on this one, I'm thinking that a non adjustable model would be the best, doesn't have to collapse as this one is to heavy for kids and the like anyway. It doesn't need to be adaptable, it just needs to fit ME and be comfy.

For the optic I'm thinking ultimately I may go with one of the bushnell AR series and maybe a PEPR (sp?) QD mount.
I don't know, I need to do some research I guess.

1. Don't drop that thing on your toe

2. I'm a big fan of collapsible stocks. You don't give up anything with them if you get one with a friction lock. All my rifles except one have Magpul stocks. 4 are collapsible. If you're in a tight space, you'll always appreciate a shorter gun.

If your thinking fixed personally i would go with the Ace skeletonstock

I've noticed a lot of guys going with those, seems pretty solid and no thrills which I like. Definetly a strong candidate.

The toes have been through worse ;) .
I hear you on the collapsible stock thing, I like em too. Just with this one I guess I want something a bit different. A very stable long range rifle built for bench shooting, but able to handle more if nessacery.

I might try the MOE fixed carbine stock, that way I get a fixed stock, but if I ever want to swap to a collapsible model it would be pretty easy since the fixed moe uses a carbine tube.

Mock-up looks pretty good. Keep up the good work!

Thanks buddy, I'm excited as this is my first "build". On my last one I just bought a complete upper and lower and threw them together, really more of an assembly. It's fun picking parts, not as much when you finally decide what you want and then its out of stock. Luckily that was the case with the barrel, I was looking at a DPMS 20" but the specs weren't quite what I wanted. After deciding to settle anyway it was already out of stock. As luck would have it, someone else had made an inquiry on barrels and Dolomite posted a few links, one of them was exactly what I wanted. $70.00 more than the DPMS but exactly to the specs I was looking for.

It's purty!

Thanks LagerHead. I try to be only practical but when there are so many sharp looking options out there that all seem to function about the same, sometimes style takes over. Additionally I have no idea if the fancy gas tube was worth the up charge, I figured since its black it will look sharp though, that was my motivation and my justification was "meh, its only $3.00 more" maybe that fancy tube will turn out to be a good move though, I don't know.

I'll be honest, I love my M4gery. This new one isn't something I think I need, heck the carbine is already more accurate than I am, I just really wanted to build another rifle and thought a long range AR sounded fun.

If you're gonna shoot long range, I agree with a fixed stock. My long range rifle has a Magpul PRS. I started with an A2 stock, and wound up changing it. Took too much time to get a good sight picture through the high powered scope. The Magpul fixed that problem with the adjustable cheek rest. That stock is expensive and heavy. But, if I do go with a Grendel with my TGO receivers, the rifle will get another PRS and a 20+ power scope.
