I feel your pain.  I had to put our basset hound, Blossom, down around the 4th of July.  She is buried at the top of the yard.  She also had cancer.

Sorry for your loss Robert, I "meet" her 1 time, barked at me the whole time, GOOD DOG.

Good thoughts for ya. Went trough this a few years back and I didn't think I would have room in my heart for another but one waddled through.

I have loved, and buried, some great dogs through the years.  Always vow never to get another because losing one hurts.  My girl, "Tipper," is at least 21 (got her at the local shelter 21 years ago this past May, according to the wife), and her time is near.  Dread this one worse than any of the others, it seems.

Dogs are God's gift to us, and good Masters are God's gift to dogs.  Grieve as long as you need to, then bless another dog with love and a good home, Robert, for you surely are one of those "gifts."

Our condolences to you.  We've been down this road a couple of times and it is always a challenge.  And yet as difficult as it is to lose one, I'll trade that brief sorrow for the years of unconditional love in a heartbeat.  In our case, after a few weeks or a few months we always decided that we missed the pitter patter of little feet on the floor and were ready to adopt another 4 legged member into the family.  The two we have now are both rescues and while we love them both dearly, we still talk about and miss the ones who came before them.  They will always be part of our lives and our hearts.  As I know Millie will always be part of yours.

Our thoughts are with you!

Very sorry to hear this. It's hard to lose a friend. I've never known a day of my life without a dog. The only bad part is they will leave us sooner than we ever want. I lost my Buddy in my avatar two years ago, and he is greatly missed. It's hard now for you, but in a month or two you will find a new friend who you will love and will love you every bit as much. RIP Millie.

Robert, I share your pain at the loss of Millie. We found a stray basset hound wandering in our field about 9 years ago. We took her in, fed her, and placed a lost and found ad in the paper. What a sweet dog! It turned out that she had run off from home about 6 miles from us... probably chasing a deer scent and got lost. We had her for a week and she was a joy to be around.

We have had and lost four dogs over the past 40 years. Know this. The pain will go away, but the warm memories will last for the rest of your life.

When the right time comes, please check with Freedom Farms Animal Sanctuary or East Nashville rescue to find the dog that's waiting for you. My wife and I have fostered seven dogs and cats for Freedom Farms to help find them good homes.  About 9 years ago, our cat passed away. A few weeks later, I was reading the paper one Saturday morning and a classified ad said there was going to be a pet adoption at Petsmart up by Rivergate Mall. I had a premonition that we HAD to go there. I told my wife to stop what she was doing and let's get in the car. We drove there and when we went in the store I looked over at the cages. From across the room, one cat made eye contact with me. He kept eye contact all the way across the room. Well, we adopted that cat from Freedom Farms 9 years ago and named him Watcher. For the very first day, it was as if we had known each other forever... such an odd but wonderful feeling. He is still with us today and still watching.

So, sorry to ramble, but I'm just trying to say we share your loss and your pain. Pets are very special... very special.

RIP Millie, you are missed.

Condolences, Robert. It'll never get better, but it will get easier.

Funny how when one's heart is full there's room enough for the whole world, but when it's empty there isn't room for even the tiniest grain of sand...

I can't say anything to make it any easier, only time will do that. In the mean time... we're all here and thinking of you and wishing we could do the impossible and a little of us hurts along with you.

Peace, friend.

What he said!

A dog's love is unconditional which is the best kind. If only we all could learn to love that way!

She would have warmed up to you like she does with everyone (it just takes longer with some folks). ;)

So sorry to hear of your loss.  Tango, Smokey, Bandit, and Momma dog are waiting for Millie at Rainbow's Bridge.  She will be in very good company.

I like your rambling and thanks for the info...I haven't decided what I'll do eventually about another hound but I'll definitely keep Freedom Farms in mind! :)

Two weeks ago today, I adopted an 18 month old male basset hound through Belly Rubs Basset Hound Rescue. I just couldn't go without a hound any longer. :)

His name is Wally and he has an interesting story...

About five weeks ago, an elderly couple who live in Lenoir City were RV camping up in the Smokies when they saw this dog wandering toward them. He went to the door of their RV and whined like he wanted to be let in. Being dog lovers themselves they obediently opened the door at which point this hound went inside, promptly jumped up on the sofa and went to sleep!  He was a bit of mess, dirty and tick infested...they washed him up in their on board shower and dealt with the ticks as best they could and too him to their vet to get fully rid of the ticks. That's when they contacted the rescue organization. They named his Wally and I decided it's a good name for him!

We don't know much about him but it was obvious that he had been on his own for a while. He is negative for heart worms which was a big relief but he was positive for worms which he's been treated for and we are also treating him for a couple of bacterial infections (ears, toenails and positive for a tick born disease; all of which is very common to basset hounds and especially in Tennessee) but overall, he's a pretty healthy boy.  Based on his teeth, my vet believes he is not older than 18 months.

He's already made himself quite at home here and quite at home with me...I still miss my girl Millie and I suspect I always will but Wally is a great hound and already a good friend!

If you have or ever had a dog who has made you laugh, brightened your life, and every day silently accepted your tears without judgment, snuggled with you, forgiven your faults and loved unconditionally - dogs are a gift that most of us don't deserve!

Man, that is Awesome. Where is the rescue located? Any pictures?

Cool story and glad you have a new friend to help fill some of the void.    I've never had a basset hound so I wouldn't know, but do they always look like they lost their best friend?

Yeah...they do...the only time that changes is when they are running at full speed and the wrinkles start to straighten out from the wind resistance!  That face also makes it darn near impossible to deny them whatever they want. :)
