Rustoleum deck coating

Not sure about the other brands but this stuff works awesome.  Deck was in serious need of some work, a ton of 1/8" splits and some up to 1/4" with holes where the knots broke out etc... Ran one coat of this stuff with a normal roller and it filled in every gap without effort, then ran back over it with a textured roller for the second coat.

If you've got a wood surface that's all jacked up, this stuff is worth looking into.  Ours looks great now and it was a complete mess just a few days ago.

Awesome! I'm about to do the same thing with my deck next month, so it's good to hear this stuff works well. Your deck appears to be about the same size as mine, so I'm curious how much it ran you.

Went through about 10 gallons of it for the stairs, deck surface and bench.  As for the actual sq/ft, I have no idea since there were other parts it was used on.  It could survive with one coat, but since we just moved in I wanted to do it well and not touch it again for 10 years or whatever.

The only tip I can really give is to use the normal roller on coat #1, I started on a small platform and used the textured roller for coat 1 & 2 and it end up using a lot more than when using the normal roller then textured roller.  Oh and some boards that were really uneven, it was faster to use a 4" roller instead of the 9" to get it leveled out.

As for the cost of everything, I think at Home Depot the coating was $79 per 4 gal bucket.  Lowe's has 3 gal buckets for $69 iirc, so you will want to get it from HD instead.

That's not bad at all for price. Did you have to do anything to prep the surface? Did you get the underside or just the top?

I have been looking at this stuff as well.  Your deck looks great.  How does it feel to walk on it barefooted?

Also, what TMF asked.  How much prep work did you have to do?

I'd think you'd want to leave the back side un-coated.  Unless the wood was completely dry (like kiln dried), you'd want it to be able to breathe, else it might rot under the coating.

I am glad to hear from someone with personal experience. I've been looking to do this on our front porch but have been hesitant. Looks great!  Cost per sqft and before pics  :x:

Prep work: sprayed it with a water hose and scrubbed with with a push broom the day before and let it dry off, then the next day I used a leaf blower to get the dust off right before starting.  Probably an hour at most spent on this, the stuff is so thick I don't think you have to worry about doing much at all.

As for the feeling on barefeet, hard to explain but it sort of feels like walking on compacted sand you would see on a beach.  It's just as comfortable as walking on bare wood

And as peejman said, you have to leave the underside alone, that's how the water evaporates.

Did the thickness of the coating cause any issues when you painted the vertical rails? i.e. did the coating run or sag because of its weight?

Posted (edited)

Didn't do anything vertical with it, the rails are just re-stained. Would say that you probably want to brush it on vertically though to keep it thinner because I'm sure it would run as thick as it is.

To add in, it would look pretty slick to have the entire deck done in it, just that there's so much detail in ours that the rails were easier to stain again instead of doing that.  Heck, I'd say there are about two hundred posts on a 4" spread.

Can you apply this over a stained deck?

Posted (edited)

Yeah, I called them with the same question and they sent me here:  http://rustoleumrestore.com/faq/

â–¶ Can Restore be applied over a previously painted surface?
Yes. Restore will adhere to a previously painted surface if properly prepared. All peeling or flaking must be removed by stripping or sanding. Remove any algae, mold or embedded dirt. Glossy surfaces must be sanded. Surfaces that have been previously coated with a stain or water sealer that continue to bead water will require pressure washing or stripping to ensure good adhesion.

Most of ours was still stained, but nothing beaded water.

It says concrete/decks on the buckets, but iirc there was a more expensive one specifically for concrete only. No idea what the difference is

Looks like I know what I'll be doing next spring. I have an old section of deck, 11 years, and a new section so I want to do something like this to make it all match as well as protecting it.

I was also concerned how it feel on bare feet since it is around the pool.

Looks good Sam1, thanks for the report.
