Defiance (NPS edition)

During the next 24 to 48 hours, yours truly will be afoot or afloat inside a national park boundary, engaged in sporting activity including fishing and/or hunting, lawfully armed, and with everything else I need except a backcountry permit.

Of course I've hunted, fished, canoed, hiked and camped in these parts long before the NPS had any interest in the place.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanx, Scott Bow aka ttocswob

(edit title to distinguish from movie tv show I didn't see and game I didn't play.)

Momentary thread hijack:

My wife and I were staying at a cabin a few months back and they still had an old VHS player with about three dozen cassettes. Of course, one of them was The Princess Bride. Needless to say, we marked an evening on the calendar while we enjoyed that and a couple bottles of wine. We even remembered to rewind it!

As long as we're talking rivers through National Parks, I love Big South Fork, too.  Going from Leatherwood Ford past Station Camp to Blue Heron may be one of the prettiest river trips in the Southeast.  As long as they've got water, that's 26 miles of easy paddling and totally under pressured fishing.

Just spoke with a 'knowledgable source' who says BSF rangers are doing just enough to say it's closed. Not aware of patrols, citations, or arrests.

I've only seen "closed" signs, sawhorse barricades and ribbon. Bathrooms are locked, but no shortage of trees.

Only a couple hours more...

My question, since they closed the parks and people started cancelling vacations to the area, is who is going to be there to keep you out? lol

Answer: no one!

About what I expected, too. Went overnight sans backcountry permit, built a campfire and everything. Never saw a soul until I reached the takeout this afternoon.

NPS had one laminated paper "closed" sign, and some red ribbon which was already cut. No signage whatsoever at the entry point.

Did catch a few small fry.

After 6 miles of water and rocks (mostly the latter) I'm ready for bed.

Yeah, it can be pretty low this time of year. We were looking at it earlier last month and called the rangers about water levels. His reply was, "oh yeah, you can totally do a canoe trip. How far are you wanting to carry them?"

That's what pushed us to the Green river instead. Being between two dams not too far outside the national park boundaries, it was about 100 feet wide, about 10 feet deep, and you didn't really even have to paddle unless you just felt like it.
