Gov data processing

Wife is a newly retired career federal employee. Their federal personnel website was always a nightmare to navigate. Of course, we see what approaching a billion bucks buys in ACA websites.

Now this article, which doesn't make one feel good about bang for the buck, but maybe minimizes the need for tinfoil on the issue of government big brother spying-- Maybe they are just too dumb to get the job done!

http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2013/10/08/2-Billion-NSA-Spy-Center-Going-Flames

The National Security Agency's $2 billion mega spy center is going up in flames.

Technical glitches have sparked fiery explosions within the NSA's newest and largest data storage facility in Utah, destroying hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and delaying the facility's opening by one year.

And no one seems to know how to fix it.

...

Within the last 13 months, at least 10 electric surges have each cost about $100,000 in damages, according to documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal. Experts agree that the system, which requires about 64 megawatts of electricity—that's about a $1 million a month energy bill--isn't able to run all of its computers and servers while keeping them cool, which is likely triggering the meltdowns.

...

The contractor that designed the flawed system—Pennsylvania-based Klingstubbins--said in a statement that it has "uncovered the issue" and is working on "implementing a permanent fix."

But that's not the case, according to the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE), which is in charge of overseeing the data center's construction. ACE disagreed with the contractor and said the meltdowns are "not yet sufficiently understood."

A report by ACE in the Wall Street Journal said the government has incomplete information about the design of the electrical system that could pose new problems if settings need to change on circuit breakers. The report also said regular quality controls in design and construction were bypassed in an effort to "fast track" the project.

Irony on HealthCare.gov is that the entities that got the contracts are the ones who mostly know the intricacies about how to get contracts, rather than the intricacies of uber IT.

If they had just turned it over to the companies that did all the micro database crunching that got BHO reelected, probably would have worked fine from the gitgo.

Not that I'm eligible, but I've tried to get on there since it opened, just for curiosity, have always gotten the "Wait, too many users" (which never works) or "system down for scheduled maintenance". Just now, I actually got to the making account area, entered all info, to get:

"Important: Your account couldnt be created at this time. The system is unavailable."

And takes you back to the fields, which are blank, so you have to start over.

And these are the same minds that will "take care" of your health needs. Right.

edit: tried it again with same info. Got "user name already taken". I used very unique user name, so it's obvious it "registered" that, but that's all, since can't log in. It remains quite broken there.

The "National Park and monument shutdown" was unnecessary. The republicans in the house don't need to defund anything. they can delay obamacare indefinitely if most of them just try to log on to the website at the same time over and over. Lol
