"It [sic] what looks like a spiteful move, the NPS even removed handles from water spigots along the Chesapeake and Ohio canal where bikers and joggers exercise as well as along the Great Allegheny Passage, just to ensure people don't get any water from them."

If that's true, that uber petty move should stand as the overall symbol of just how much "the government is here to help you".

Like Thomas Jefferson once said. " Any Government that is big enough to give you everything is also big enough to take it all away."  I think Obama has stooped to and all time low with this last deal about not paying the families of the Soldiers killed in the war this past week and the Fisher Group Charity stepped up and paid it and made sure the families were flown to Dover to meet the planes bringing their loved ones home. Obama told Mr Fisher that the Government would give him an IOU and when the Government opened back up he would refund them their money back. That was the last straw and a new poll showed Obama rating at 37% and Fox News expects it to fall even lower. His blame it on the Republicans has back fired on him and Reid and I'm thrilled. I hope he goes into the negative column and into the dirt cellar........

It is true. And the ones they couldn't take the hadles off they put a lock on them. I am suppose to run a 5K run this weekend on the C&O canal but they may have to move it because all the parking lots are locked up.

Like I said I jest don't get it all land far as parks are owned BY WE THE PEOPLE we paid for it with all OUR tax money , so if I want to go camping on property that my tax dollars paid for it I don't feel that I need gov to tell me that I can't use it . Who made them god of the land that we paid for . I don't have to have some one to hold my hand and watch out for me , I have the means to protect myself if need be . It's our right as the people not the gov-. To use these lands if we so desire.
So why can't we use them ???? Oh and we have park rangers working to keep us out , but thay can't work other wise really . , what's y'all s take on this , am I missing something here. Edited by ted

One thing I will say is that I spend a lot of time in our National Parks, Battlefield Parks, etc and have met a lot of Rangers. I have never met a Park Ranger who wasnt in a good mood (Must be the job) and dont ask a Park Ranger a question about something they know about, unless you have some spare time. Never heard anyone say "We need to avoid the Park Rangers", if we cant find something we are always seeking out a Ranger. A lot of those Rangers are also volunteers, down at the Vicksburg Battlefield and up at Gettysburg, they have many volunteer Rangers and for those paid its not the highest paid job in Government. They HAD a good reputation with all of those I know and the people I run around these parks with.

That reputation is all but destroyed. They now "look like" any other Government thug. People I know who spend a lot of time in these parks cant believe the Rangers would not stand down. Calling them thugs, Government Nazi's, saying if ever TSHTF they are now going to find out they are on the wrong side and no need to ask why, they have proven themselves.

That being said, it looks to me in some of these circumstances these Rangers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I cannot believe the Rangers that I know and that I have met would even consider doing what they are doing. But, considering where their paychecks come from, if they didnt do it, then they would more than likely be out of a job. On the other hand doing it, they have destroyed their reputation as the good guys in the parks.  So the question I suppose would be should they stand down, disobey their bosses, lose their jobs and in a month when this is over and a month later when Americans with short memories forget about it and go back to the Kardashians, try to figure out how to pay their bills and feed their families? Or do they do it and rebuild their reputation afterwards? All of those Sheriffs Association who stood up against gun control for example cannot be compared, they are elected officials, these guys are just paid Government employees. I know what I would do, but everyone isnt me or someone else.

I dont think they deserve a pass. Put up the barriers then look away. On the other hand when we get back to business as usual, they need to make some extra effort to rebuild that reputation. They earned it, our Government at the top helped to destroy it, we can just add their reputation to the long list of other things this Administration has destroyed, like the economy and people's lives.

"Just doing my job" does not give them a free pass. They are adults and should know right from wrong. They are just as guilty as the A-holes in D.C.

Well, maybe but put your self in their place and look at having a family and no job. If they refuse to do their job the feds will just send someone out there that will and the may not be as nice as the rangers are being. I don't fault them. I fault Washington DC...........jmho

Didnt say they deserve a pass, said just the opposite. But then "again" the question comes up. You know as well as I do that 2 months from now the biggest things on the news will be Miley Cyrus crotch and which Kardashian is getting married to her 18th husband next week.

Now I know what some of us would do, but the fact is the majority of Americans are not willing to sacrifice as much as a Mars Bar for anything. They will complain,  bitch, whine and moan, but just like RIGHT NOW, they will sit back and watch whatever happens happen.

Heard a good explanation of what we are seeing by Newt Gingrich a couple of weeks ago. Gingrich said that yes, Obama has violated the Constitution on numerous occasions, but that is a separate issue from what we are seeing right now. What we are seeing is a "Classic clash of Government" exactly how the Founders intended it. The rules were put in place to bring both sides to the negotiating table and work out the problems for the American people. It will fail if the Conservatives fold, but if they dont, Obama cant go on much longer, the American people will not accept it. He pointed out that Tip O'Neal had 12 shutdowns while Speaker, and that Reagan also shut down the Government, except Reagan didnt shut down 17%, he shut down everything. Congress forced Reagan to the table, and at times Reagan forced Congress to the table and thats how it is supposed to work.

Then a week later hear another Conservative speaking. I cant recall who it was, I wish I could. But this Conservative stated that what we are seeing is a Godsend. Obama played right into Cruz's hands and is now doing exactly what the Conservative faction of the Republican Party expected, he is over playing his hand. He has zero skills as a Politician. The things he is doing are making the citizens hate him more and more, this is good news to help defeat Hillary in 2016 and take back the Senate in 2014 as well as get rid of the RINO's in the House.

Then this morning I read how the Presidents approval rating is down to 39% and 81% of the people are mad and dissatisfied with Congress, several different polls. Well GOOD. If 81% of "AMERICANS" are mad at Congress, then statistically, that would make about 39% of Republicans mad and since if you live in Louisiana, your not voting in Colorado, maybe we CAN send half of these RINO's home.

OTOH, I would be willing to match that number and bet a box of ammo to someone that AT LEAST 81% of incumbents are re-elected. Hope Im wrong.

I guess this answers the question "would the military turn on the people?" Looks like at least some would. I know the Park Rangers are not military but their incentive to follow orders is also less compelling than the military. The Park Ranger might lose their job. I would think that a soldier that refused a direct order in a time of "crisis" would suffer much more.

One former president got elected by saying "I feel your pain". This president wants to inflect as must pain and inconvenience as possible to get his way.

As for those park rangers locking the water down, the Hell with them and their families. If they think I should give them a pass

for restricting my rights, and for taking things out of my hands, that I may need to live on, they are no different from the one

who gave the order. We are all Americans. We do not tolerate things like this. those who tolerate tyranny like this are going

to be the ones who have none of my respect, regardless of which branch of government they work for, and that includes any

military personnel who side with them.

If these people, who appear to live in some kind of alternate universe, wish to be part of the problem, they will see how much

problem will become of pissing off the American taxpayer. Those parks belong to you and I, not the federal government. Those

buildings and memorials, which are being guarded by "essential" employees of the government, had better remember who pays

their bills: the tax payer.

I didn't know the oath that lawmakers and lawkeepers swore was to the President, or some political party.

In all honesty I think Obama will find it very hard to find many soldiers at all that would follow his orders pertaining to the American people just because he is having one of his baby temper tantrums because he is not getting his way on some issue. He has done just about as good a job of alienating himself from his military and he has the American people. I reall don't think he would want to push any buttons regarding the people in the military or he may hear that famous quote Kevin Costner said when that phoney sheriff tried to arrest him. Costner said "if your not care your going to see me 1 to many times."  He don't want the military knocking on the White House door cause it will be to escort him and his wife out of the House they don't deserve to be in in the first place..........jmho
