What kind is this ? Been letting him stay due to his ability to work in stealth mode. Heck I may name him and feed him bugs. He's made it past 2 mos on that corner. gyqe6aju.jpgygesara3.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 of course it ate my spelling.

These spiders are everywhere in the woods now. I see a couple every time I run Beamon Park early in the morning and a couple when I walk the dog.  I'm pretty sure it's this species. I have one outside on my downspout by the kitchen as I type this.

Actually, I believe that's the common orb weaver. On side of house, under gutter or something, maybe attached to nearby bush or tree too,  right?

See this recent thread:

http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/69520-which-spider-is-this-huge-one/?hl=spider

Our "garden" spider (actually "writing spider") is bigger, more colorful, and not spiky like the pic threeeighty shows. Note the "writing" also:

Very common for them to come out in the Fall looking for the larger moths.

I've never figured that, either. The garden spiders are around in July and August and get lots of good stuff, but the orb weavers don't show till 'bout first or second week of Sept when all the big good meals are pretty much gone.

I think that is referred to as a garden zipper.

Yep, one of the colloquialisms. Writing spider, black and yellow garden spider, etc...

Writing spider leaves web pretty much up all the time, the orb weavers eat most or all of it each morning and build it anew each evening.

This is the best time for the Luna and other large moths to leave the tree because the leaves are falling , they then head for under hangs and whatnot. These spiders will build a web in front of flood lights and rebuild them the next night ; they care not for flys and mosquitoes. Not enough body juice.

Imagine what  would happen if one of them could trap Ice-T's Coco ?

We would have the biggest spider with the biggest butt on Google map !

Just never seen any moths around to speak of when the orb weavers come out myself, and I lived in the boonies a long time.

We also have beau coup of the orb weavers right here in the urb where I live now, but haven't seen a moth of any kind since before they came out. Actually, the orbers have all disappered now, three middle weeks of Sept was their heyday around here, but we had them between every tree and most every breezeway.

Yep, that's a female. Males much smaller and drab.

Got to come to the big city and live on the creek my friend. They are everywhere this evening , I suppose my floodlights are drawing them. I can probably pull 5 big green Luna's off my back brick in the morning.

i can get out and net them all to bring to you , but my wife will probably have me committed.  :stalk:

Believe it or not, there was some kind of sort of funnel web builder on my light fixture on porch a few weeks ago, guess it was a wolf spider, and I scared up a few very small moths to throw on his web as I never saw him get anything.

He'd run out and grab 'em instantly and then run back into the funnel, if you blinked you missed it. Retirement is great, I'm so easily entertained, never a dull moment. :)

I've got about 10 years to go , if retirement benefits don't change to age 95 in the next 3 years. Then I will spend my nights out in the country , I plan to sell our urban home and have about two hundred acres to ride the side by side and shoot and whoot ! Then I will be a real country man. Both of my parents are still living  (thank god) in their mid 80's. I still cut their grass and hedges. It's wearing me down. Down , down.

Ack!  Kill 'em all - with fire!  Ack!

Sometimes I wonder if those common orb weavers can fly.  I swear, one built a web 15 feet off the ground, from the gutter on my house to a tree 22 feet away or so.  Oh, and it was directly above the stairs that lead from the deck down to the back yard - right about face level.  They are also all over the trees/bushes on my property.

Regardless, they receive the same treatment from me.
