Does Nashville PD have a digital investigations group?

Anyone that works with the PD in Davidson Co (or any of them in a surrounding area) know if they have any teams or actual positions for digital investigations or do they just send those incidents to the FBI?

Currently in a systems forensics class and our project has us gathering info on some specific processes used in the real world and compare them to what is taught in the CISSP materials.  Would really like to get this done in person if possible, and all I could get from the FBI guys I know was information on evidence collection at the scene.

They use their IT department for a lot of things and some not many detectives have some special training. Check with a company downtown called Logicforce consulting. I know a former officer that works there doing computer forensics. They do criminal and civil cases they might be able to help you.

MNPD has tech guys that run phones. I don't know if they're processing HDD'S anymore as there was evidence issues a few years back.they do have/had a computer forensics lab that does work to a degree. A lot of major cases go to TBI on DA request or if the case was bound by the grand jury it will go to the TBI as you well know forensics is very time consuming where many agencies can't allocate people to do nothing but drives due to cost and manpower.. If you need some help mssg me off list I can get you a good poc to help if you need it. Logic force does crim defense work and civil work. Good guys. You want to talk to the guys over at the TBI.

Having worked with the TBI on a number of cases, and interviewed a number of their folks looking to move to the private sector - I ran the team for a local fortune 100 company that did computer incident response and forensics for the entire company worldwide for a number of years.

The truth is you're likely going to be disappointed in the information you get from the TBI, they have software program X and they are certified in it's use and anything beyond running that software is 'magic' to them.

The sad fact is I've worked with a number of state and local law enforcement entities over the years and there just aren't very many top notch guys working there...  Often times when we had to handle a criminal incident, we ended up collecting the evidence for the responding agency because they're 'investigators' often times didn't have the technically experience to collect data beyond a desktop computer.

Good computer forensics guys are in high demand, I took my SANS Forensics course years ago out in San Diego and finished the 'practical' on the last day first, before I could get to my rental car that day I had 4 different business cards from recruiters in my hand and another trying to catch me before I could drive off with a job offer ;)

If you wanted to some insights on how private businesses are doing computer forensics and interfacing with law enforcement in the real world I'd be happy to help.

Thanks guys, will give TBI a check.  Jay, I'm not too worried about what they use, as most places use the same systems that have held up in court previously.  The professor wanted us to gather info on their handling processes; basically how they manage the evidence and not necessarily how the data is extracted.... At east that's my understanding of it, guess a double check is in order.

If I can't get through to anyone over there Dustbuster, I'll shoot you a PM.  Thanks again
