Boat Rebuild UPDATE: 11/8/13

Well, I'm back at it. I've had my boat since I left the Army. Was a gift from my dad. Spent 3 months rebuilding the outside and working my butt off to make her run like new. About a year after I finished it I noticed the floor was getting rotten and the wood was giving me some issues. Well, I figured once I had spare time I'd build the floors and completely remodel it. And, that time has come.

Little history of this boat. It's a 1972 Winner Viscount 21'. It's been in my family since day one. In 1979 to 1980 my dad took a chainsaw to the rear and made it an inboard and dropped a 350 chevy engine in her. In 2007 or 2008 it sank while I was deployed. My dad gave it to me as a 20th birthday present and rebuilt it while I was on my first deployment. Thats when I came home and repainted it and made her perfect. Or so I thought...

Anyways, I'm pretty much home for good from working in Afghanistan. Trying to have a baby now and I kinda need to be home for that... Mail man can't have all the fun, right? So, last minute whim I said to the wife, lets drive to Minnesota (where I am from and my family lives still) and get my boat. We left Tuesday, and got home thursday. 13.5 hours up, 16 hours back. Lot slower towing this thing... Worst part, 20 MPG up, 9.6 MPG back. Yeah, I miss my diesel, and couldn't stop thinking about how much I wish I still had it driving home. Haha.

This thing sat for 2 years since I moved down here, and had some bad water damage that warped the side panels and front panels to the cabin so it was inevitable I had to do at least a little work on it.

So, Couldn't start working on it friday. It was the wife's birthday so I had to wait tell today. Thankfully I have some amazing neighbors who came over to help. I couldn't have tore up as much in one day if it wasn't for them.

I do wish I took a picture before we started. But I might be able to find an old one of it.

Carpet and wood work is gone.

At least I put a new gas tank in it in 2009, right? HA. The old aluminum one had flaking particles clogging my gas line, so I figured a new plastic one would be much better for the long run.

Vroom, Vroom.

image_zps72bf55e6.jpg

Bad wood where the passenger seat was. This little spot made me want to do the entire boat. And I'm sure glad I did after taking the floor up today!

image_zps68ae9a14.jpg

Found an uninvited guests home. No idea how old that is...

image_zps0d758e47.jpg

Floors are all pealed up, we left them there for something to walk on. Rotten screws and nails holding them down with fiberglass over top so we didnt know where they where, so, little pri-bar then a saw zaw and good teamwork, done and done.

I'll keep posting pictures as I go and see what I can come up with for old ones of the inside to give you an idea of before and after.

I've never owned a boat, but I've heard the saying, "The best day of your life is when you buy a boat, and the best day of your life is when you sell your boat". Looks like you have a great project to take pride in and plus it is something thats been in your family for many years. That makes it that much more special. I look forward to seeing how you progress with it.

My first Bass boat was made by the Winner Boat company in Dickson Tennessee. They use to be one of the Rolls Royce of luxury boats. The one you have is on the web if you google Winner Boats they have an exact picture of your boat. I loved my fishing boat but our grew it and went bigger to a 20 foot bass boat from an 18 and went with Skeeter.

back in mid 80's i got a 25 foot mako open fisherman from a retired eastern airline pilot.  the boat was a local key largo boat and look like new.  but i worked myself to death for the first three months getting the boat redone so it would be safe off shore. it was okay to use in the bay.  you don't want a problem with your boat when you are in the third shipping lane fishing.   one would thing that a pilot would take care of things, but i guest not.  one thing that i learn was that you can go off shore fishing two days a week and then spend five days working on the boat.  the ocean is hard on a boat.  lakes and rivers are easy on them.

Thanks guys!

Went to West Marine today, got a gallon of epoxy, hardener, fiberglass, and some tother small stuff.

Got the Marine grade plywood at "Nashville Plywood" on 28th yesterday. They were great and had it in stock. $522 for 8 sheets though..... I hope I don't make a bad cut!!

About $750 into this now with all my materials for the floors and wood work. Figuring about $800 more for the vinyl, foam, and work done to make the seats (at least thats my LOW guess..... )

I'm waiting for my neighbor to have some more free time to help me out and get the floors cut and placed in and epoxied and glassed down. It's about a day to dry, and I need 2 coats, if not more. So this was thought to be a 2 day project to start, now its turning into weeks. haha. Ehh, its a project, I need something to do in my spare time.

Need to also find carpet... forgot about that cost..... ugh.

Rotten old floor panel

Just doing some mockup to make sure it all fits. Everything has to come back out, get sealed, have to do the fiberglass work underneath, then it can all go back together and I can lay carpet and figure out how I want to design my hook and all that fun stuff.

Well, wood is epoxied with 3 coats, floor is re-fiberglassed where the screws held the old floor down. Nice and sealed up.

Now, I'll get some riv-nuts in there so I can bolt the floor down instead of screw it so I can take it up whenever I want.

I'm ordering some Monstaliner to seal the floor in when it's all in there so there can be ZERO water that gets to it, no matter what.

I'll be doing snap in carpet this time, not gluing it down so I can take it out and dry it. Which I should be ordering soon once I get off my lazy butt to measure the old carpet and get a good size.

It's getting closer!

There is no new pictures to be taken or posted. It's just the same stuff but with epoxy on it now. Nothing really changed.

It ought to be about ready for "SS Minnow" any day now, eh? Looking good!

Great work! I want to see pictures of it on the water. I know it takes time and winter is coming, but you know the standard. Pics or it didn't happen.

Nice looking boat. Good luck with your restoration, what you have done looks real good. Glad you can fix it up and keep it since it has been in the family for a while.

I owned a boat once.....better stop with that story, too many negative waves, I don't want to spoil your fun.

Had a little issue with some wiring. Instrument panel wasnt letting me run my blower motor and electronics. Fun finding that fix.... Then my stereo had a wire pull out under the floor, ALMOST didn't see it, and got VERY lucky where it happened. Found it, put on a new connector, and boom. Finished all my wiring!

Took it out today for an hour and it ran flawlessly!!!!!!!!!! To bad it was 40 gallons of non-ethonal premium for $4.19 a gallon, which didn't even top the tank off... BUT IT RUNS GREAT!!!! Didn't even take on a drop of water.

I am running the old hood. Next year I'll fiberglass in sections and do a 3 hood system with hydraulic lifts and compartments to store the tubes and what not in for each side. I just wanted to use it this year while I still could.

Looking great, Skipper! You've done miracles with it since I last saw it. It looks brand new.

I've been around boats all of my life, worked in the boat business.  At first when I saw this project I just shook my head and wondered why you were taking it on.  You have done a fantastic job!  Looks like steller craftsmanship, you have rally brought the old girl into her prime!

Pretty cool rebuild. I really like the hull shape, nice lines. Is the area in bow just storage? I'm having a hard time picturing the size of the area.

The bow is big enough that my wife can lay in there and I can curl up in there, and there is also a toilet in the center under the cushion. It's a pretty big cabin. Great for storing munchies and purses pretty much. No one ever uses it. Ha
