10/22 Builders, a question

Did you all buy a new rifle, or use an used one? If you use a new one, did you just get the woodstock or what? I am looking at picking one up and probably won't do anything to it as soon as I get it, but I was wondering what would be best for later endeavors. Or if someone would like to edge me towards the Savage .22 model, I am all ears.

Used or new, it won't matter.  The receiver, bolt and trigger housing are the key components.  The barrels work nearly as well as any high end aftermarket barrel if they are rechambered and recrowned.  However, your average 1022 will likely manage better than minute-of-squirrel stock and it won't matter if it is from 1964 or 2013.  Just about anything 1022 or nearly any other .22 you need to know about modding or simple facts, issues and fixes are contained here:   http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php

Buy it as cheap as you can if you plan on modding it. New or used it doesn't matter because 75% of the original gun will be removed so you don't want a lot tied up in it. On the other hand if you buy new you can sell the barrel and stock for about $50.

If you buy new, get as close to what you want as possible.   If you want a wood stock, for example, buy it that way maybe.  Used, It may come down to what you can find.  Unusual to not see ANY for sale though.

Unless you are trying to make a competition quality 100+ yard accurate super build, the stock barrel on a new one should be fine??

You can actually build the whole thing from nothing... Tactical Solutions makes an excellent 10/22 action.

0% Ruger parts content (except the mags, I like their factory mags).

It might not be that they aren't any for sale, I just haven't found one yet. Mostly because I don't know where to look. I will mostly be using it to shoot around the farm etc. Thank you all for the info.
