Well, it seems that the folks in the security detail out here at the Y-12 Security Complex, yes those same fine folks that were outwitted by a small group of senior citizens lead by an octogenarian nun a while back have been at it again. It seems that last week there was what has been reported as an accidental discharge which injured one of the security operators. Now, I'm not sure what really transpired last week though I do have my suspicions based upon the last incident earlier this year when two officers had to be taken to the local medical center for treatment of ballistically induced sub-coetaneous aperture, but the DOE, the Security contractor and the media are expecting we the people to believe that while on a routine range exercise, one that did not involve rapid fire exercises, an officer experienced a misfire, ejected the cartridge onto the deck and when bending down to retrieve the apparent dud round after the exercise was over was struck and injured by what miraculously turned out to be the longest recorded hangfire in the history of firearms and modern ammunition. Now I've been shooting for a little more than fifty years and experienced all types of ammunition malfunctions but never have I heard of a modern cartridge hangfire lasting more than a few seconds (5 or 6 at most) and never have I heard of anyone being penetrated by a projectile from a cartridge that fully ignited outside the chamber of a firearm or outside of a confined chamber-like apparatus. So, I'm thinking that just like the last time, someone was fingering their gun or handling it in an otherwise unsafe manner and torched one off. I think they have a training problem and apparently a paperwork and reporting problem as well. I could be wrong... but I don't think so. Anyone else got any insight into this incident or ideas regarding such?

I remember reading the Darwin awards several years ago and one of the "runners up" stories was about a couple of guys in Arkansas who'd been out frog gigging late one night when their headlights went out.

 

Using a flashlight, they determined that a fuse had been blown. Not having any spare fuses in the car, one of them discovered that a .22LR bullet would fit perfectly in the fuse slot and their headlights were once again working and off they went. Unfortunately, as they approached a long bridge south of Little Rock, the short which had initially caused the fuse to blow also caused the .22 round to overheat and discharge. The projectile "struck the driver in the left testicle" causing him to "swerve down a steep embankment" and run headfirst into a large tree with the result that his passenger broke both legs. According to authorities, "No alcohol was involved."

I've thrown all kinds of ammo in the fire and it barely pops.

Recently I watched myth busters. They put rounds in an oven. Best I remember was a .44 mag hull dinging the inside metal. The projectile pretty much stays still while the brass flys away.

Makes sense when you think about it. Probably wouldn't have the same result if the brass were lodged in a fuse receptacle. :shrug:

:eek: Yeah, a bad choice of words on my part. I train security guards for a variety of organizations such as Murray, Aegis, Pellissippi State, Pinkerton Govt. Services among others and for the most part they are fairly sharp individuals. Had I used the term "security guard" I may have offended some of the organizations and personnel I am contracted to work with. Hey, money is money. :shrug:
