scope for model 60

Need some advice please,

 

I have a Marlin model 60 that I use to mainly to plink at targets with and the occasional squirrel or rabbit hunt.  Would also like to use for coyote around the homestead.  Here's the thing, my eyesight isn't what it used to be and I'm thinking about adding a scope.  

What do ya'll suggest as a good 100 yd or less affordable scope?   By affordable I mean $75 or less.

Go over to Bass Pro, the closest WalMart or Academy and look for rimfire scopes.  They usually are 3-9 power and come with rings that will mount right onto the receiver and are very adequate. 

 

Good luck trying to find a silver one to match the stainless.

I've used Simmons scopes a few times and they are a decent plinker scope. In fact, had one on a deer rifle for about 8 years. Glass isn't the best but I think goodvfor the price -around $45 for a 3-9x40.

Unfortunately, Bushnell has discontinued its fine 3-9 .22 series that used to go in the $40 or less range, only offer higher end ones now. (they came in silver too).

 

The BSA Sweet .22 is often touted in the sub $75 range:

Doesn't come with rings though. I've almost bought one a couple of times. :)

 

Course, I've used some $20 Barskas that have done quite nicely, came with the tip off rings, and have even held up on higher powered rifles too, YMMV.

 

One thing about the Marlin 60, is that some 3/8" dovetail rings just don't grab it well, and scope will creep toward the back, even come off no matter how tight you get it. My current set does on my Model 60 now, and I had a different set that did same on a 10/22.. But unlike 10/22 the Marlin is not drilled for Weaver/Picatinny type base, so that's not an option.  If that happens many folks actually recommend a one piece pellet gun type mount like this:

 

 

Besides having a continuous contact area with the rails on both sides, they have a set screw that goes down from the top to further anchor it. I picked up sort of a no name off eBay I'm gonna try when I get a Round Tuit.

I have tried lots of different rings on my Marlin and none of them stay put.  They all walk.

 

Any 3X9 scope will work fine on that rifle.  The rings you will just have to live with.

 

As I finally read OS's post I would like to try those rings.  The set screw might be a difference maker.

On my Glenfield I had cheapo Wally World rings that never moved, but I had refinished the receiver. They might have had more bite into the paint than the original finish. On my '83 60 I have the one piece Leapers mount I don't think that think has a chance of moving even with a slightly larger/heavier scope. It has a Mueller 4.5x16x40 AO on it now.

 

For the scope on the Glenfield I used a Simmons 8 Point 3x9x40. It was all of $35 at Academy a couple of years ago. It was clear, bright and decent eye relief. Seemed to hold zero well on a rimfire. At 25 yards it was a little blurry at 9x. I've heard good things about the BSA Sweet 22 as well.
