Expired Permit

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine had his permit and just discovered that it expired two weeks ago. He said that he was going to renew it this week, but for some reason I thought that if it expired, you had to start all over again, with the class and everything.

Am I off base, or is there a grace period. Obviously he is not legal to carry, but can he still get a renewal?

Pretty sure I've heard TN resident's stating there is a specified grace period for renewal, but don't quote me on that. I'm sure someone "in the know" will come along shortly and chime in.

If the handgun carry permit has been expired greater than 6 months past the expiration date, the applicant will have to start the complete original application process. This includes completing a handgun safety course, paying the $115 fee, being fingerprinted and undergoing a background check.

He wont be happy for the 6 month waiting period/backlog currently for renewals. :D

:P

TN still doing the hand receipt, in-lieu-of, thing when you go to renew? Think I remember some of you guys mentioning this... but never really heard if it was a legit way of carrying while the renewal is in the works. Might be a way for your friend to carry, AK, while he's waiting.

Can anyone confirm / deny? Bkelm? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

I believe the whole "carry the receipt" deal is only good if you renew before your permit expires. Otherwise you have to wait for your new permit to carry.

Edit to add:

http://tennessee.gov/safety/handgun/renewals.htm

Permit Holders whose permit has not expired and are renewing their permit, may legally carry their handgun with the receipt provided from their application. Permit Holders whose permit have expired and are renewing their permit, cannot lawfully carry a handgun until they receive their new permit.

Remind him not to carry until he gets a new permit.. or bad things could happen if he gets pulled over and volunteers the info.

Yeah, he said he knew that much.

I think I'm going to set a reminder on my computer, even though my renewal is a few years out. I don't want to let mine slip by.
