I usually just check forum post count and see how long they have been a member. I also search their previous posts to see if they are a douchebag or not, and what if anything they have sold in the past. Generally someone isn't going to rip you off if they have been on a forum for a long time because their name would get smeared and they'd be banished.

I always use paypal with a credit card.

If I were sending funds for a person to person transaction then a name would be in order. Also I would only buy from someone who was known on said forum.FWIW I have never been ripped off on a person to person internet deal on a forum however I have twice failed to get something from an ebay seller. From now on if I see something shipped Media Mail on ebay I will pass.

I don't put all that much stock in how long someone has been a member of a particular forum.

For example - I've not been a member here very long at all. And my post count and posts wouldn't really give you a clue that I've bought and sold tens of thousands of dollars worth of items over the internet since 1994, as well as buying and selling on eBay since the late 90's.

That said, I generally go on the "feel" of the deal - much like I would in person. If it doesn't feel right, there is generally a reason so I call the deal off or am MUCH more cautious.

And like others said - it also depends on the $$$ involved, as well as the item.

All of that contact info is just about useless when it comes right down to it.

I'm in the middle of getting ****** for a sizeable sum by a guy who's been a member on the Brian Enos forum for over 5 years. I might have to take a 12 hour drive to attempt a recovery of the money or the goods.

That sucks, I hope you get your stuff.

But you're right. Most of that stuff doesn't mean anything once you get stiffed. Internet forum transactions are a gamble.. most of the time you win, but the one time you get boned is enough to make you very paranoid.

I'm lucky to have another forum at my disposal with considerable resources across the world to be able to help resolve many issues like this for their members.

Good luck with your situation...

Using PayPal helps some. A lot, if you use credit card.

Even though most of the buyer/seller protection policies are eBay specific, just the fact that your seller has a PayPal account in good standing is a good sign.

And, assuming you use a Credit Card through PayPal, you have the ultimate lever, you can simply file dispute with credit card company if all else fails. Which generally gets the guy's PayPal account nuked.

Of course, the seller has to pay PayPal fees on the amount, so most don't want to use it.

My drama is on it's way hopefully to a successful conclusion. The forum admin reached through the Ether and gave the seller a virtual slap. I've got tracking numbers showing a package on the way. Hopefully it's not a box of rocks.

In case you are not aware, using PayPal to buy or sell firearms WILL get your account locked. I know too many people who have had it happen.....

Actually, been using it since 2000 and I did NOT know that, but looking at their TOS I see you are right.

Guess you have to be VERY discreet about item bought/sold; BUT then if there's a prob and you have to do a dispute or credit card reversal, the truth would have to come out.

So, thanks for the info and I RETRACT my previous advice; oops.

No problem - I'd rather someone find out like this than in the middle of a transaction where you might lose your guns or your money... or both.
