Finally finished!! What a pain in the ass. Was are to get the filter off, the filter did not appear to have any oil on the gasket and it had stuck.

Anyways, much thanks to Luke for the impact chisel idea. It did not knock the filter off, but obviously loosened it some as after a few minutes I switched back to filter pliers and the filter band wrench - two people, top and bottom of the filter and we were able to get it.

Worth mentioning that this morning before the impact chisel I broke a heavy duty set of Craftsman pliers. It was one of the 18 inch slip joint, snapped right at the joint. I couldn't believe it snapped those, they are thick.

Thanks for all of the ideas. Just glad this is finished and I know the new filter is installed correctly.

Took me a while to learn that sometimes lighter hammering action is more effective than even a breaker bar and cheater pipe combo with more actual force. Once you get it to move a little the twisting motion will work. Either way, glad you got it whooped and didn't burn a complete 2nd day doing it.

Sears stands behind their lifetime warranty on Craftsman hand tools. Take them in to Sears and they'll give you a new pair. No questions asked. I broke a crowbar (don't ask) and they swapped it out quick and easy.

Yeah I know...I love Craftsman tools. I've only used the warranty a couple of times and they do stand behind their product warranty.

I would go back to the oil change place with the mangled filter, and offer to insert it rectally on the technician who serviced it! Edited by VERO1
