Long gun transfer?

I have a friend coming in from Michigan and we're hoping to transfer ownership of his Savage .308 to me when he's here. I'm not sure what the requirements are in Michigan, but I think he would like to have an FFL do it just to be sure all the paperwork is right.

Any advice?

Your friend and you take the gun to a FFL dealer. Your friends hands the gun to the dealer, the dealer runs a background check on you for $25 or whatever their fee is, then hands you the gun. All done, all legal.

If your friend is not a TN resident and you are, you need to go through an FFL in TN.

Unfortunately, not correct. An unlicensed person (namely, the friend from Michigan) can only sell to another unlicensed person if that unlicensed person is a resident of the same state. Read BOTH of the first two answers from the Q&A below:
