To go brand!

what brands do you guys generally like for rifles? I hear cetmet is not the greatest and DPMS is for entry level. I have a DPMS ar 15 and was thinking about getting another ar 15 (this disease is spreading). I heard that colt has some good ones and bushmaster as well. Who do you guys think would be a  good brand to go with? I would love to put one together myself, but unlike legos, I dont have the proper tools.

I think an optics ready is around $800 or so.  I don't have anything bad to say about Bushmaster, but in that range, I would personally go with a S&W (and i have one also).  I also have had very high end AR's, but for just a basic AR, S&W is a great value and reliability is excellent.

My main question would be, what do you want to do with it.  If you want to Varmint hunt or something, then my recommendation would change, but for just a normal AR, Smith's are good.

...... so, for a simple ar to keep around for the range, the brand isnt a big factor then. How would a S&W and a colt compare to a dpms? (sorry, but thats the only ar I have so I have to use it as a base)

Those are three roughly equivalent ARs.  The S&W is a pretty good value for the price it generally runs.  That said, deals can be had for any brand in that class (Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, Rock River, S&W, whatever) if you look around.

I think most people (including me) would tell you that quality would go: Colt > Smith/Bushmaster >DPMS.  Without going into a lot of detail and specs and geek talk, if all you want is a serviceable rifle, any of them will work.  For under $1000, you will get as many opinions as you find people.  I would go look at a few and pick the one you like in your price range.

Here's a couple of options I would say are very fairly priced.

cetmet? You mean a CETME? If that is what you're thinking than that's the original design which the H&K G3(HK91) is based upon. Century imported them and two out of three will be good shooters while the third might need a little "tweaking".

AR's are easy to put together but right now is a buyers market what with oversaturation from Firearmageddon, so just buy one. Rock River Arms is solid, as is the S&W M&P but if you get the M&P make sure it is the 1/8 5R barrel.

I was also looking for a G3 style rifle and I kept hearing about problems with the century arms ones. I never heard of rock river arms. At first I though you said rock island.

It's sounds like you're ready to move up from an entry level AR DPMS to a mid tier or top tier AR. Daniel Defense is a great top tier AR that won't break the bank in the $1,500 to $1,700 price range. If you need something cheaper, then Colt or S&W for $1,100 to $1,400.

Ah, in that case look at a PTR91, good quality and use the HK rear drum sight unlike the CETME's goofy flippy paddle sight. Good price point at 800(used)-1250ish(MSRP), plus mags are STILL stupid cheap, not what they WERE but $4.99 still cheaper than AR15 mags.

to be honest, I am trying to stay under $1000 if possible. Working on a 68 bel air and its draining my funds. Along with a audi that never wants to run. But as soon as I get a change, I will try and pick up the PTR that the nashville armory has.

Edit: nvm, the armory is gouging the price on the PTR

franklin gun shop was selling them for I believe $24.99 for 3 mags. But I still cant find a good priced G3. And I am thinking about picking up a better ar rifle and giving my DPMS as a gift for my dad. Since there is no way in hell i am buying him a all numbers matching luger like he had. (and we arent even german! :screwy:)

I wouldn't buy anything from CTD after the crap they pulled this year BUT this just shows you that they ARE in fact out there.
