A2 Build

I tried to keep this one all milspec. I may do an A4 next.

Do it..... I guess its only appropriate since you building an A2 for the OKC3S has inspired me to build an A4 like my issued rifle. I like the A4, but if (when) I build one I'll probably end up getting a rail mount carry handle so I can shoot some old school irons also.

Ain't all that retro just yet. Still a bunch of 'em in Afghanistan being used.

Is that by choice or necessity? When I out in 12' they were trying to finish up converting the whole Corps to A4's and M4's but that may have not happened yet.

Necessity.  Believe it or not there are still Army cats still running around with them.  Mostly Fobbits, but they're still around.  Of course, the Afghans have them now, so they are all nice and shiny.  You know they love to take the finish off a rifle.

Holy crap. I thought the Army went completely m4 like 3 years ago. I had no idea they were still fielding A2's. And yeah, the Afghans need to stick with AK's. Their weapons "maintenance" is enough to bring a tear to my eye.

It's all ash and trash that still tote them around.  I haven't seen grunts running around with them.  I'm assuming the ones I've seen sporting them are Nat'l Guard/Reserve or some kinda super-POG low density MOS that time forgot.  Hell, I remember being in the Guard in the late '90s and our HHC was still running around with M16A1s!  Those things wouldn't even properly fire the ammunition we were issued.

I forgot the Guard units. I wouldnt be suprised to see them with Alice gear and A1's half the time lol. I have a friend who was an Armoror in the Marines from 92 to 2000. He said when he got stationed in Korea they still had racks and racks of A1's and 1911's. The military hangs on to that shit forever..

I viewed this build as retro, even though there is a bunch still out there. I like the gun. Simple and light (for what it is).

The differences between an A2 and A4 are pretty small. Swap out the upper receiver and handguard, and you're there. I'm guessing a lot of the A4's began life as A2's

Good stuff still gets used. I forgot that.

The military has done a good job of preserving upgrade paths on their rifles. It's why rifle length uppers, including the A4 still use the triangular handguard cap. AFIK, you can stick an A2/A4 barrel assembly on an A1, and keep it running with current ammo. I don't know how the military actually does it, but I do understand the compatibility across generations.
